How to Become a Leading Man

bigstock Man reading from the holy bibl 82689353

Special Feature

You’ve seen him, Hollywood’s leading man- handsome, rugged, loved by friends, and feared by foes. He’s the all-American hero that boys dream of becoming and girls dream of marrying. Unlike the fictional character in the movies, God’s leading man may or may not be good-looking, tough, charming, or dreaded. And yet, he possesses one key trait: a commitment to personal growth in all aspects of life. Take a minute to reflect on your journey to become an authentic leading man.

The Standard. Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi said, “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” Jesus, the perfect model of leadership, is the exception to Lombardi’s axiom. Still, Jesus established a pattern of personal development every godly male leader must follow. Luke highlights the holistic growth and development of Jesus in Luke 2:52- And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. The Greek word for “grew” is a nautical term meaning “to make headway in spite of blows.” It suggests a certain inevitability of purpose and destiny. This unwavering commitment to His mission is a key aspect of Jesus’s leadership that every man must strive to emulate. In His humanity, Jesus led in suffering, intellectual debates, temptation, and empathy for the oppressed. Notwithstanding His deity (Philippians 2:6-8), Jesus’s leadership stemmed from His physical, mental, spiritual, and social fitness.

The Response. God calls His leaders to grow, love, and lead like Jesus (Philippians 3:14). This call demands faithfulness despite the headwinds of an aging body and mind and involves cultural changes that may threaten your freedom to live and work Biblically. Submit first to the leadership of Jesus, then practice what you’ve learned. Implement a leadership fitness plan to improve the following:

  • Mental acuity- fill your mind with God’s Word and wholesome literature
  • Physical agility- eat healthy and exercise
  • Spiritual integrity- study the Bible, worship, and fellowship with other believers
  • Social credibility- love and serve your wife, family, and community

Leadership requires mastery- not perfection- of the basics. Mastery starts with mimicking. When you grow as Jesus grew, you lead as Jesus led. May you one day say, as did the apostle Paul, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:18-19

Bullard family photo
Paul and Brooke Bullard are seen here with their two beautiful daughters.

Our daughter Elle is five years old, and Valentine’s Day is one of her favorite holidays. She loves the card-making and gift baskets, but it’s not about either of those activities. It’s not even about expressing love for each other- we do that every day. Time with family is why Elle loves Valentine’s Day. Because my wife, Brooke, and I make it special for our family. It would be easy to give Brooke all the credit- she’s excellent with special occasions. But the truth is, it takes both parents to make the most of every opportunity with their kids.

Paul and Brooke Bullard
Paul Bullard carries the values he learned at Big Oak Ranch into his role as a husband and father.

This is where the Ranch comes in. I had no idea what I was missing until I went to live at the Big Oak Boys Ranch: a loving, healthy family. Before the Ranch, I came from an unhealthy, negligent home environment. I thought it was mostly normal- even though I was miserable. And I was on the path to repeat what I experienced as a kid. This all changed when God placed me at the Ranch, in a home with two houseparents who loved us, and just as importantly, loved each other.

Of course, we were blessed with incredible opportunities provided by generous donors. Beach trips, Christmas presents, and more. But none of those things were life changing. What changed my life was the day-in and day-out routines: Family devotionals during breakfast before school. Dinners together after school. Playing games and watching movies together. The values of respect for each other and myself in finishing chores. In short, time together in a loving environment changed my life. I carried those values with me when I met my wife. (I don’t think she would have said yes to me otherwise!) We made the intentional decision to spend time together every day, and when we started a family that practice carried over with our children. My family would not be what it is, or where we are, without God using the Ranch to change my life.

Parenting Points

Holy Week is an important time in the Christian calendar, but it can also be a great time of year to connect your kids to the story of Jesus on a deeper level. Here are five ideas for enriching your Holy Week experience as a family.

1. Palm Sunday Celebration. Start Holy Week with a joyful celebration of Palm Sunday. Gather the family and create palm branches using construction paper. As you wave the branches, read the Biblical account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-40). Palm Sunday is a great day to discuss the significance of Jesus as the King.

2. Maundy Thursday Foot Washing. On Maundy Thursday, families can create a powerful and humbling tradition by practicing foot washing. Parents can wash their children’s feet, reading John 13:1-17, focusing on the significance of Jesus’ actions. Foot washing encourages humility and service within the family and is a great reminder of Christ’s love.

3. Good Friday Reflection. Good Friday is a time for solemn reflection. Consider setting up a family movie night to watch a film about the crucifixion and resurrection or discuss Good Friday’s significance. You can also create a “cross” out of sticks or craft materials and take a moment to write down prayers or reflections about your gratitude for Jesus’ sacrifice.

4. Holy Saturday. On Holy Saturday, consider holding an Easter vigil. Gather around candlelight to read Scriptures that tell the story of Jesus’ resurrection. You might light a special candle in your home, symbolizing the light of Christ returning to the world. This can be coupled with a family craft, creating resurrection-themed decorations to display on Easter morning.

5. Joyful Easter Celebration. On Easter Sunday, create a lively celebration filled with joy and gratitude. Start the day with a service at church, followed by a meal together. Consider preparing a resurrection-themed Easter egg hunt, where each egg contains symbols of the resurrection, such as a small cross or a stone. This keeps the focus on the true meaning of Easter amidst the fun.

Incorporating these traditions into your Holy Week observance creates memories and a deeper spiritual understanding for your kids. Let this Holy Week not just be another date to fly by on the calendar, but a time of intentional spiritual growth and reflection.

David and Penny Houston

Church Leaders

After 36 years of dedicated service, Bishop David Houston retired from Vandiver Church of God. Known for his integrity and compassion, and lovingly called Pastor Houston or Brother David by many, he has touched the lives of countless individuals throughout his career, embodying the love of Christ through his unwavering commitment to ministry.

David and Penny Houston
Pastor David Houston and his wife Penny are seen here during the recent Retirement Celebration held in their honor.

Pastor Houston received his education at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. He began his ministry in 1978 after receiving his Exhorter License through the Church of God. He was ordained as a minister in 1990, and in 2015, he became an Ordained Bishop with the Church of God. His ministry took him to various churches across Ala., beginning with his role as Pastor at Sylacauga Westside Church of God, serving as a lay minister at Childersburg Church of God and also traveling throughout the state as an evangelist. In January 1989, Pastor Houston began his leadership at Vandiver Church of God. Under his guidance, the church has seen significant growth, including the addition of a new sanctuary and education wing. In 2007, the church purchased 40 acres of land across the street, laying the groundwork for the dream of a new facility. This vision came to life in May of 2015 with the opening of a new church building. By February 2025, the $4 million facility was fully paid off, marking a major milestone in the church’s journey.

Throughout his tenure, Pastor Houston, with his beloved wife Penny by his side, devoted countless hours to pouring into the hearts of others through his powerful sermons, community outreach, home and hospital visitations, and many other services. Their dedication to serving others has made a lasting impact on both the church and the surrounding communities. A special Retirement Celebration was held on March 16 at Vandiver Church of God to honor Pastor Houston’s and Penny’s many years of faithful service. Baptist Health Dr Walker

Healthy Living

“In as much as you have done to the least of these, you have done it unto Me.” Matthew 25:40

In January 1922, a group of Baptist men purchased the Birmingham Infirmary which became the home of the first Baptist Health Hospital. Their goal, grounded in Jesus’ example of attending to the needs of “the least of these” was to develop a hospital in Birmingham that physically, spiritually and emotionally enriched the health, dignity and wholeness of every person served.

Healthy Living Baptist Health Dr Walker with BibleFor more than 103 years Baptist Health has been dedicated to ministering not only to physical needs, but also the spiritual and emotional needs of those entrusted to our care. Because the founders were focused on the holistic care of patients, they sought competent and compassionate professionals from every discipline including those who would lead the Pastoral Care Department.

Chaplains always played a significant role on the interdisciplinary teams at each of our hospitals: providing comfort to patients, families and staff during times of crisis, celebrating during times of joy, offering guidance to physicians, nurses and employees when spiritual matters are encountered, and serving as Pastoral Care Professionals to our communities. Chaplains are available 24/7 at each Baptist Health hospital including Brookwood, Citizens, Princeton, Shelby and Walker Hospitals.

Dr. Cecelia Walker
Dr. Cecelia Walker has served in the role of Executive Director of Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Education for six years. Although her office is based at Princeton Hospital she travels to all the Baptist Health Hospitals to meet and round with her chaplain teams who work throughout the hospital system.

During the Covid-19 Pandemic the role of Chaplains was especially significant. Initially, to preserve personal protective equipment, Chaplains offered care virtually; however, many distressed patients insisted that they wanted and needed pastoral presence. Baptist Health honored the patients’ requests and protected the Pastoral Care Team. When families, friends and Pastors were not allowed to visit their loved ones, Chaplains visited them and offered a consistent and necessary line of communication.

Baptist Health has the oldest Accredited Clinical Pastoral Education Program(ACPE) in the State of Alabama and the second oldest in the country. It is among the most respected programs in the United States. Currently, the Chair of the Board of Directors for ACPE, leads Baptist Health’s Pastoral Care Team. More than 1000 ministers have trained at Baptist Health serving churches, hospitals, hospices, and the Armed Services across the United States and around the world.

In my role as Executive Director of Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Education, I have witnessed the priority Baptist Health places upon the spiritual and emotional needs of our patients, families and staff. The full support and commitment to the Pastoral Care Department is one of the clearest expressions of dedication to the Baptist Health Mission: “To extend the healing ministry of Christ through holistic, people-centered health care.” The employees, physicians and volunteers who comprise Baptist Health continue the legacy of our founders offering physical, spiritual and emotional care within a fully integrated system of healthcare delivery. “It is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in His sight!”

Bacteria Diagram

Healthy Living

It is common knowledge that probiotics can improve intestinal health, but did you know that probiotics can benefit our bodies in many other ways? Our gut microbiome is composed of trillions of microorganisms, and a healthy gut microbiome is essential to our overall health. Probiotics can help to restore an unhealthy gut microbiome, and that in turn can help a multitude of illnesses from poor immune health to nervous system dysfunction. But can probiotics really help you lose weight?

Bacteria DiagramRecent studies have shown that our gut microbiome can play a significant role in body weight regulation. A 2021 review of several studies found that moderate-weight people tend to have different gut bacteria than those who are overweight. In addition, the review also found that moderate-weight people tend to have a more diverse population of microorganisms as part of their gut microbiome. Thankfully, probiotics can be used to help modify and diversify our gut microbiome. Probiotics also appear to affect our body weight in many other ways. Research has shown that probiotics can influence our appetite and energy levels through the production of short-chain fatty acids. Certain bacteria in the Lactobacillus family have been shown to inhibit the absorption of dietary fat, and therefore reduce the amount of calories your body harvests from the food you eat. Certain probiotics have also been shown to increase the release of appetite-regulating hormones and other hormones that may lead to decreased fat storage.

A particular probiotic, Akkermansia muciniphila, is showing promise as a next-generation probiotic for the use of weight management and metabolic disorders. Akkermansia is a bacteria that is found naturally in our bodies. It usually colonizes our gut early in life, and it comprises approximately 3% of the gut microbiome in healthy adults. Studies have shown that we see an increase in obesity and diabetes when adults have reduced levels of Akkermansia in their gut microbiome. We don’t fully understand how Akkermansia is helping to regulate obesity, but it has been shown to increase thermogenesis, increase secretion of GLP-1, and reduce carbohydrate absorption. One study showed that obese patients who supplemented with Akkermansia for 3 months saw a reduction in weight, fat mass, hip circumference, insulin resistance, plasma cholesterol levels, the markers of liver dysfunction, and systemic inflammation.

There are many nutritional supplements that can help with weight management, and probiotics can certainly play a role in helping to maintain a healthy weight. Probiotics can also provide a multitude of health benefits in addition to healthy weight management. If you are interested in using probiotics as part of your nutritional supplement regimen, be sure to speak to a healthcare provider to ensure they are right for you.

Save the date for the 22nd Annual Motherwalk 5K and Fun Run with the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation on May 10, 2025 at Homewood Central Park, 1632 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, 35209.

Ovarian cancer is the 5th deadliest cancer among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2025, about 21,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and over 13,000 women will die from this disease.

Motherwalk group of runners posing for photo
Make a difference for all of the women in your life by participating in the Motherwalk. The 5K run begins at 8 a.m. and the Fun Run starts at 9 a.m. Register at www.cureovariancancer.org.

The signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer are vague or silent, and there is no simple or reliable screening. As a result, only 15% of women are currently diagnosed in the early stages of this disease which is when the five-year survival rate is at its highest. That is why the key to earlier diagnosis is awareness of the subtle signs and symptoms. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include pelvic pain, bloating, difficulty eating, fatigue, unexplained weight gain or weight loss, backaches, painful intercourse, nausea, menstrual abnormalities, and even changes in bowel habits. “Unfortunately, a simple and reliable screening method is not currently available for ovarian cancer. A pap smear does not screen for ovarian cancer,” says Ashley Thompson, Executive Director for the NLOCF.  “Paying attention to your body, knowing the signs and symptoms, and going to your annual gynecological exam are the best methods for early detection. A woman knows her body best and what is normal for them. If you notice any changes or abnormalities consistent with symptoms of ovarian cancer, contact your doctor right away for an exam.”

The 22nd Annual Motherwalk 5K and Fun Run will be a celebration of women and will raise awareness of the silent symptoms of ovarian cancer, remember those who have lost their lives, and honor those who are battling or have beaten ovarian cancer. The event will feature music, a kids’ zone, educational displays, merchandise vendors, a photo memory mile, and a moving dove release.
