Best Books Where Goodness Still Grows Cover Image April 2020Sometimes mourning and lament are the appropriate response. As I write this review, we are in the season of Lent, a time of spiritual reflection, fasting, and contrition. Lent is a call to repentance among God’s people. At no point in my lifetime has the church of America so desperately needed the observance of Lent. I am persuaded that the path to revival in our churches is one of contrition and repentance. Sadly, too many of us feel we have nothing to repent of, and that is exactly why revival isn’t happening. We are in denial.

In the days prior to Lent I received a new book by Amy Peterson. Within hours I was texting quotes. Where Goodness Still Grows- Reclaiming Virtue in an Age of Hypocrisy is a lament for our callous disregard of truth and kindness, our complicity in political and social sin, and our failure to love our neighbor as Christ taught us. But the Gospel is good news and there is hope for us. We can repent. The people of God can turn away from sin and embrace virtue once again. We can show kindness to the stranger instead of cruelty. We can love our enemies instead of destroying them. We can extend hospitality to non-Christians rather than hostility, joyfully proclaiming a message of hope and peace instead of waging war against those with whom we disagree. We can champion truth rather than applaud mendacious leaders within and outside the church. The path to genuine revival is before us, but it is a path of contrition, repentance, and making amends for the wrongs we have done in God’s name – and there are many. Our sins have been great, our repentance should be greater still.

In addition to writing Where Goodness Still Grows, Amy Peterson writes for publications including the Washington Post and Christianity Today. Where Goodness Still Grows is available for purchase at Sanctuary Christian Books and Gifts in Alabaster.

I’m quite sure Amy Peterson does not think of herself as a prophet. As she explored, however, the virtues of kindness, hospitality, hope, and love, I discerned an element of grief in her writing that reminded me of the ancient Hebrew prophets. When God calls out his people for their sins, hope and mercy are embedded within the words of judgment. The choice is before us. We can continue to destroy our witness by exhibiting to the world our failure to love our neighbor as ourselves, or we can repent and ask both God and the world to forgive us. When we relearn to love both God and our neighbor, joyous revival will come. Until then, it is time to mourn.

Infertility is a very common problem affecting one in six couples in the United States. The rate of infertility increases as a couple gets older, with fertility decreasing significantly after 35. If you and/or your spouse are over the age of 35 and have been attempting pregnancy for six months or longer with unprotected intercourse, or if you and/or your spouse are under the age of 35 and have been attempting pregnancy for one year or longer with unprotected intercourse, you may need assistance in achieving pregnancy. The physicians of Henderson & Walton Women’s Center would be happy to discuss with you and your spouse any concerns you may have. To accurately pinpoint the reason for infertility, it is important to be evaluated so the cause can be determined and if possible, treated so the chances of pregnancy can be increased. Your Henderson & Walton physician will obtain a complete medical and sexual history as well as perform a physical exam. If further treatment is recommended, your physician will refer you to our Infertility Department.

Diagnosing Infertility. Fortunately, almost 90% of all diagnosed cases of infertility can be traced to a specific cause and once the cause is known, many can be successfully treated with medications or surgical interventions. Diagnosing infertility may include; A complete medical history of both the male and female, screening of a women’s hormone levels, basal body temperature, ovulation predictor tests, hysterosalpingogram to evaluate fallopian tubes and uterus, ultrasonography to monitor maturation of follicles (egg sacs), and Sims-Huhner (PCT) to evaluate the ability of the sperm to penetrate the cervical mucus.

Infertility Factors. There are many factors related to female infertility. They may include: ovulatory dysfunction, hormone imbalances, infection, blocked or absent fallopian tubes, scar tissue from previous surgeries/infections, and endometriosis. Most female infertility can be treated. For women who do not ovulate regularly, there are medications that can help. Medications such as clomiphene increase the output of hormones that are necessary for ovulation to occur and stimulate development of follicles. Other medications given in injection form such as gonadotropins also stimulate development of follicles in ovaries. These medications can be given alone or in conjunction with each other. During these treatments therapies, a patient is monitored closely by lab work and ultrasonography. If the problem is anatomical, such as blocked fallopian tubes, scar tissue, ovarian cysts, or endometriosis, there are surgical interventions that might address these problems. Infertility is just as likely to be caused by male factors as by female factors. Some common causes of male infertility are: poor sperm production or function, varicocele, obstruction of seminal tract, undescended testicle, ejaculation problems, hormonal abnormalities and infection. Males will be recommended to have physical exam and semen evaluation by a urologist. Depending on the diagnosis, men can usually be treated with medication or surgical correction.  In cases of decreased sperm counts, artificial insemination may be considered.

Some couples may need more advanced interventions requiring a referral to a reproductive endocrinologist. Your Henderson & Walton physician will be happy to guide you in making the best choice for your family’s future.

If you want to keep your commercial property dry and damage-free all year round, make sure to keep the roof in tip-top shape. What if the system has suffered enough damage to prompt a replacement? Then, you should choose a durable and efficient material like polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Here’s why.

What Is PVC? PVC is a strong and resilient single-ply membrane that’s commonly used on flat or low-sloped roofs. PVC roofing is made of two layers of polyvinyl chloride, with polyester added in between to serve as reinforcement. This material is one of the most widely used flat roofing materials available today. There are many benefits to this roofing system, including:

1. Lightweight, but long-lasting. For example, our Duro-Last® PVC roof allows for greater resistance against abrasion and impact damage. The fact that this roofing material is lightweight also means these roofs can be installed easier and faster – ensuring continued, day-by-day business operations in your commercial property.

2. Durable. PVC roofing remains a favorite for flat-roofed buildings because it has been proven to have exceptional performance for many decades. Its membranes are particularly resistant to rainwater, chemical exposure and gale-force winds. What’s more, these roofs are non-combustible, allowing for improved fire safety. Just make sure they are properly installed by a dependable roofing contractor.

3. Energy-efficient. PVC roofs provide remarkable reflective capability. This helps keep your commercial property cool and comfortable even during the hottest summer while lowering your air conditioning bills.

4. Low maintenance. Our Duro-Last PVC roofing is prefabricated in a controlled environment, allowing for reduced potential of roof leaks. It also requires minimal maintenance – in fact, you might notice that repairs are few and far between when you choose a PVC roof.

5. Backed by manufacturers. Our PVC roofing systems come with solid warranty coverage that adds an extra layer of protection to your investment.

Hinkle Roofing is your go-to company for all your commercial roofing needs. With our Duro-Last PVC roofing systems, you are assured that your property remains comfortable and damage-free during any weather. During normal homeschool days, parents often worry if they are doing enough. Many find security by prioritizing the 3Rs of reading, writing, and arithmetic. A focus on these ensures the academic basics are being covered. During troubled times, homeschool life cannot continue as normal, and parents are even more prone to worry. Even in the hardest season, however, you can continue to homeschool. Three different Rs become essential to continue homeschooling with excellence or maybe simply with sanity. Allow space for yourself and your family to rest. Focus first on your relationships. Enjoy real-life learning opportunities.

REST. In the storms of life, you cannot expect to continue at a usual pace. Adjust your routine, open up margin, and create time to simply be. Pursue different types of rest: take a nap or a walk for physical rest; step away from social media for mental rest; spend some time in worship for spiritual rest. Thoughtfully consider what type of rest each family member currently needs. Remember to take care of yourself as well as the kids. Allow yourself the freedom to rest from the normal frenzy of life.

RELATIONSHIP. When life feels out of control, focusing on tasks can overshadow focusing on people. This is the time to choose relationships first. Sit with your child, look into their eyes, and talk without an agenda. Incorporate fun, joy-filled moments by playing a board game or joining your kids on the trampoline. Pray together and serve others to watch God build your children’s faith. Academic capacity is enhanced by strong relationships, so focus on people before tasks.

REAL-LIFE LEARNING. Rest and relationship provide reminders that academics are not the only aspect of homeschool life. Amid life’s struggles, real-life learning continues. Children gain resilience, flexibility, and strength. They learn how to handle disappointment and grief. They will even continue learning academics. Academic learning, however, might look different than normal. Difficult times are the perfect opportunity to learn in daily activities. Discuss math as you cook together. Teach them how to do laundry. Walk outside and explore nature. Read good books together. Continue reading and talking, and watch your child’s education blossom.

Yes, you can continue to homeschool during the difficult seasons of life. If you choose to focus on rest, relationship, and real-life learning, these seasons might even provide your richest times of learning together as a homeschool family. Classical Conversations provides a flexible curriculum to allow space for your family to rest, community to support your family’s relationships, and conversational tools to enhance real-life learning. Times can seem crazy. The unknown is scary. With everyone being panicked around you, how can you stay positive and hopeful for the future when everything seems to be falling apart? Lift your eyes. From the situation. From the stress. From the uncertainty. Lift your eyes to the One who knows, cares, and has it all under control. Jesus.

I want to give you a few practical ways to lift your eyes in these times. Things that you can focus on and progress in that are positive. Here are some tools to help facilitate healthy movement during this season and then I have some practical ways to help you healthfully fuel your body.

Here are a couple exercises you can do at home to create healthy movement:

  1. Bodyweight squats (legs)
  2. Hip thrusts (Hips and glutes)
  3. Pushup (Chest and triceps)
  4. Plank (core)
  5. Wall sit (legs)
  6. Jumping jacks (cardio)
  7. Burpees (modified if needed)

These are a few simple moves most people know that will get you moving. Pick 5 of these moves and do them one after another without any rest. Then try and see how many sets of that you can do over a 15-minute period. This short workout will keep your heart rate up while hitting many muscle groups in the process. Make sure to stretch and cool down after. Have fun!

Here are some tips to keep your nutrition simple and heathy at home:

  • Spinach! Whatever you can find in the stores, be it fresh or frozen, is a great and – usually tasteless – way to add more vitamins and minerals to your meals when you’re low on vegetables or salad greens.
  • Smoothies! if you can’t eat it, drink it. If you’re finding it hard to get broccoli for meals, grab some ingredients to make a few smoothies and drink your greens instead. Kale, spinach, and collard greens work great for this.

We are in this together! As you lift your eyes, the weight of your current circumstances will get lighter. Focus on the things you are thankful for every day. There is hope for today!

Scams seem to increase around tax and spring time. Here are some to avoid.

So-called “banks” call or send emails asking the senior to confirm their identity to make sure their account is secure. The scammers are insinuating that the senior may have been the subject of identity theft, and “the bank” wants to confirm their information. The senior gives their personal information which the scammer promptly uses to steal the assets. Guess you could say the scammer has confirmed the account was not secure!

If your Caller ID says “Unavailable” for a caller’s name, just let it go to voice mail. And if one does get you on the line, never answer with just the word, “Yes” which has been abused as granting permission in scams. Scammers still pretend they are from Social Security, Medicare, or the IRS. Just remember that these government agencies do not call and threaten to put you in jail if you don’t immediately wire money to them. These agencies communicate in print.

Some scams occur in person, too. A man came by and said we were hooked up to the gas lines, but we were not using gas. He said it was a law that we would have to pay to remove the gas lines, but we could pay him to put a cap on the line, and we would not have to dig up the lines. He said he was from “the City” and even gave us a name and number to call to verify. It was a scam, but he was rather gutsy to try it at a law office.

A current Power of Attorney with a trusted person can help if a scammer gets too close. And make sure your broker has a trusted person to contact in case any questionable requests occur on your investment accounts. That trusted contact can also update contact info, health status, and let your broker know of any new legal guardian, executor, trustee, or holder of power of attorney.

A broker can place a temporary hold on a suspicious disbursement from an account of an investor age 65 and older or investors with mental or physical impairments that the broker reasonably believes make it difficult for the investor’s own financial interests to be protected.  The broker can contact the investor, the trusted contact, or law enforcement.

With pollen and scammers in the air, don’t believe everything you hear.

Each year, the College Board releases its annual “Trends in College Pricing” report that highlights current college costs and trends. While costs can vary significantly depending on the region and college, the College Board publishes average cost figures, which are based on a survey of nearly 4,000 colleges across the country.

The following are cost highlights for the 2019-2020 academic year. Note that “total cost of attendance” figures include direct billed costs for tuition, fees, room and board, plus a sum for indirect costs that includes books, transportation, and personal expenses, which will vary by student.

Public College Costs (In-State Students)

  • Tuition and fees increased 2.3% to $10,440
  • Room and board increased 2.9% to $11,510
  • Total cost of attendance: $26,590

Public College Costs (Out-of-State Students)

  • Tuition and fees increased 2.4% to $26,820
  • Room and board increased to 2.9% to $11,510
  • Total cost of attendance: $42,970

Private College Costs

  • Tuition and fees increased 3.4% to $36,880
  • Room and board increased 3.0% to $12,990
  • Total cost of attendance: $53,980

Reminder on FAFSA timeline. Families were able to begin filing the 2020-2021 FAFSA on October 1, 2019. The earlier timeline was instituted a few years ago to better align the financial aid process with the college admissions process and to give parents information about their child’s aid eligibility earlier in the process. The 2020-2021 FAFSA relies on income information from your 2018 federal income tax return and current asset information. Your income is the biggest factor in determining financial aid eligibility. A detailed analysis of the federal aid formula is beyond the scope of this article, but here’s how it generally works:

  • Parent income is counted up to 47%
  • Student income is counted at 50% over a certain amount ($6,840 for the 2020-2021 academic year)
  • Parent assets are counted at 5.64% (home equity, retirement accounts, cash value life insurance, and annuities are excluded)
  • Student assets are counted at 20%

The result is a figure known as your expected family contribution, or EFC. Your EFC remains constant, no matter which college your child attends.

Forgiveness. It is something that we so often want to receive for ourselves, yet so often find it extremely difficult to extend to others. As we approach holy week and the death of Jesus on the cross, forgiveness stands at the center of the narrative. At the cross, Jesus purchased our forgiveness by going to the cross as our substitute. As Jesus hung on the cross, He was dying the death that you and I deserved to die. He was taking the punishment that we were due.

Parenting Points Ben Birdsong Father Forgive Them Graphic
This devotion is an excerpt from Ben Birdsong’s book Words from the Cross: 7 Statements that Will Transform Your Life. It is a 7-day devotional exploring Jesus’ final words on the cross through devotional reflection and illustrations by Pete Collins. Words from the Cross is currently available on Amazon.

As we approach the first saying of Jesus from the cross, it shouldn’t surprise us that Jesus is extending the same forgiveness to others that He is purchasing for us at the cross. Luke 23:34 ESV says, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Jesus’ first words from the cross are a prayer. He begins by calling out to His Father. In the moment of crucifixion, Jesus was facing great pain and suffering so it would be natural for Him to call out to God for relief or rescue, yet Jesus is calling out to God for the rescue not of Himself but of others – those who were murdering Him.

The fact that God’s forgiveness could be offered to the murderers of Jesus means that there is no one who is too far from God’s grace. There is nothing that you can do that takes you to a place beyond the reach of the forgiveness of God through Jesus. Jesus goes on to pray that the people “do not know what they do.” They don’t understand the magnitude of their sin nor the power of forgiveness being bought for them by Jesus at the cross. For the crucifixion team, this is simply another day on the job. They don’t understand that the Jesus that they are putting to death will in three days defeat death by resurrection and bring them new life.

When we come to the extension of forgiveness by Jesus to His enemies at the cross, we must understand that forgiveness comes at a great cost, that no one is too far from grace, and that in the midst of His darkest moments Jesus is still a God who pursues those who stand under the judgment of God. So today, who do you need to share the gospel message of forgiveness to? During the Easter season, you have a great opportunity to begin a conversation about the true meaning of the holiday. It’s not found in bunnies and spring colors, but in a God through Jesus who pursues broken people with His grace and forgiveness even in the darkest of moments.
