God, Country, & Momma’s Cooking

Loyd's letters

The Home Front

As America experienced growing pains and wars, so did Alabama. Our citizens stepped up to do their part to defend our country. We are savagely dedicated to our football, but more importantly, we are dedicated to defending our God and country. During these painful times, mommas cooked and prayed, and our soldiers went off to war and dreamed of coming home to the love of family and Momma’s home cooking.

Loyd's letters
Seen here is Loyd after returning home from the war as well as some of his letters he wrote back home.

Many of my family members fought, bled, and some died in the different wars faced by America- World War I and II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the war in Afghanistan. Great-Uncle Bert Swann was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed, defended his country, and then returned to Sweet Home Alabama to raise a family. Uncle Nelson Campbell was in Vietnam. Uncle Jack Daily was a sharpshooter in World War II and earned many medals. Among my many relatives who served was my Great-Uncle Loyd Parker. He fought in World War II and was in a prisoner of war camp for eighteen months. His family didn’t know if he was dead or alive. They didn’t hear anything to know his fate or his whereabouts. Can you imagine the anguish the Parker family faced not knowing if he was dead or alive for a year and a half? The many tears and prayers that went up on Loyd’s behalf?

What got them through? A deep faith in God and many prayers and support from the community carried them through the wilderness of this tribulation. Loyd’s mother, Great-Grandma Parker, had her hands in the dough bowl making biscuits for the family when the joyous word came that he was alive and coming home. She wiped the flour off her hands with gusto and cried, “Whoopee! Loyd’s coming home!” and left her biscuit making and ran down the road to tell her son, Avis, the great news. When Loyd came home, a great celebration was held with lots of good hugs and his momma’s home cooking as the whole community joined to celebrate. I wasn’t born at the time, but l am sure one of Grandma Parker’s yard chickens was on the menu. I hope you enjoy this family recipe!

Encouraging Word

John 3:16 tells us that God’s gift of love to the world is His Son Jesus. In order to benefit from a gift, it must be received. The giver can make it available, but it still must be received. Once accepted, you can enjoy the benefits. What are some of the benefits of receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Here are seven major benefits.

1. Forgiveness of Sin. Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross paid the price of our sins. It removed the barrier of sin that separated sinful man from a Holy God. Spiritual death means separation from God (Romans 6:23). Jesus is the only remedy for our sins (John 14:6).

2. Spiritual Birth. Birth precedes life. In John 3:3, Jesus said you must be born again.

3. Spiritual Adoption. Galatians 4:4-6 says that God sent His Son to redeem us and provide adoption for us into God’s family. Now God becomes our Heavenly Father.

4. Receive the Holy Spirit. I Corinthians 6:19 says that our bodies become a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 says that we are to be filled with the Holy Spirit. This third person of the Trinity comes to reside within us to be our comforter, counselor, guide, and helper to enable and equip us to live the Christian life.

5. Personal Relationship with God. As mentioned, God loves us, made salvation possible, paid for our sins, gave us His Spirit, and adopted us into His family so that He could have a personal relationship with us.

6. Experience “All of Life.” In Christ we have “new life” (II Corinthians 5:17); “complete life” (John 10:10); and “eternal life” (John 11:25- 26).

7. Spend Eternity with God. We were created for eternity. Psalm 23:6 says that we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. In John 14:2-3, Jesus said we would enjoy heaven with Him.

These are some of the benefits available to us by receiving God’s gift, Jesus as our Lord and Savior.  Do not take them for granted but enjoy them.

Special Feature

There are places in this world that feel like they were made for something more. For quiet moments of reflection. For the sacred joy of gathering. For the kind of celebration that leaves the soul renewed. FoxHaven is one of those places.

FoxHaven bride and groom in front of pond and cross
FoxHaven is a 45-acre countryside retreat where life’s most meaningful milestones are honored with grace and intention.

Set among the gentle hills of Jemison, Ala., FoxHaven began not as a business plan but as a prayer. When Greg and Traci Fox, along with their son Ryan, first walked the land they saw more than buildings and fields. They saw a space waiting to be restored, not only with their hands but with purpose. They asked God how their family might use this land to bless others. The answer came slowly and faithfully. And, over the past year, the dream took shape. Today, FoxHaven welcomes guests to a place where peace is present, where hospitality feels personal and where gathering together to celebrate becomes something sacred.

Weddings, ministry, corporate and nonprofit retreats and family reunions all find their place here. But it is not just the events that matter. It is the spirit in which they unfold. There is a stillness to the landscape, a sense of grace woven into the vineyard rows and the light that falls across the lake. Guests often say they feel something they can’t quite name. Perhaps it is the quiet joy that comes from knowing you are seen, welcomed and loved.

FoxHaven bride
Just a short drive from Birmingham, FoxHaven in Jemison is the perfect setting for weddings, retreats and
celebrations.

Throughout the property, names carry meaning. Names like Stillwaters Villa, Grace Cottage and Vine & Vow have been chosen with Scripture in mind. These spaces are more than beautiful. They speak to a deeper truth. That this land was given back to God and everything that happens here is an offering. The Fox family never set out to build a venue. They set out to serve. Greg brings a heart for restoration and tradition. Traci offers the wisdom of years spent leading with care and creativity. Ryan, though building his own path in healthcare, remains grounded in the shared vision of shaping a legacy that honors faith and family.

Together, they have created a place that feels set apart. A place where celebrations are wrapped in reverence and joy is something shared not only between guests, but with the One who gives every good thing.

FoxHaven logoFoxHaven is not just where people gather. It is where they remember. Where they rest. Where they rejoice in the beauty of togetherness and the quiet presence of God.

Miracle Moments

Brought to you by: Molly Maid of Birmingham, www.mollymaid.com/birmingham

Community Partner 25 Years“In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:6

Six years ago, I didn’t think I would make it. I didn’t think I would graduate high school and go to college, much less at Samford. I am planning on attending the Big Oak Ranch ASCEND program and staying there for all four years of my time at Samford University. I want to study marine science to one day become a marine mammalogist. Looking back, I am so proud of where I’ve been and where I’m headed. I wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for the Lord, the Ranch, and my family’s constant encouragement and support.

Chelsea with her family
Chelsea is seen here celebrating her graduation from Westbrook Christian School with her family.

My houseparents have gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to me. They have taught me how to budget, talk in front of people, hold myself to a higher standard, and so much more. They have prepared me for anything thrown my way and if there’s something that I’m not ready for, I know I can always call my mom or dad and ask them anything. I love them and am so grateful to the Lord for giving me them.

The RITA Award given at Westbrook Christian School’s graduation, stands for someone Ready, Inspirational, Trustworthy, and Available. These words are all the things I aspire to be. I want to be ready for anything life throws at me — from a new sister to putting what I want aside to help someone else. I want to inspire others to step out of their comfort zone and chase big dreams. I have always wanted to be someone that you know my words are true when they leave my lips. Finally, I want to always be available for anyone who needs me. Any time of day or night and I want to help others feel seen.

When they read what the RITA Award meant at graduation and how important it was, I didn’t think she would say my name. When she said my name, I was stunned. I didn’t realize that I made a difference in people’s lives, but hearing my name called helped me realize that I did make a difference, I made people feel seen, and I loved like Jesus. That meant the world to me.

This integration assures parents that their child will receive holistic care that respects and enhances their faith journey. 2. A Safe and Supportive Environment. One of the greatest challenges children face with behavioral issues is feeling misunderstood or alienated. Fortify fosters a safe and welcoming environment where children can express themselves openly. Our counselors are trained to create a non-judgmental space that encourages honesty, allowing children to feel secure as they confront their challenges. This supportive setting helps to build trust, which is essential for effective therapy.

3. Tailored Strategies for Behavioral Improvement. Every child is unique, and so are their challenges. Fortify counselors use customized strategies designed to address each child’s specific needs, learning styles, and family dynamics. This personalized approach ensures that parents are not only provided with tools that work but are also involved in the process, creating a united front for their child’s development.

4. Emphasis on Family Involvement. Fortify recognizes that behavioral issues often impact the entire family, not just the child. They encourage family involvement in the counseling process, offering sessions that include parents and siblings where appropriate. This inclusive approach helps families communicate better, resolve conflicts, and strengthen bonds – vital components for a child’s emotional and behavioral health.

5. Focus on Positive Development and Resilience. Counseling at Fortify is not solely about addressing problems; it’s also about fostering resilience and positive development. Counselors equip children with coping strategies that pave the way for emotional intelligence and adaptive skills. By focusing on strengthening their character, children learn to navigate future challenges more effectively.

6. Endorsed by the Community. Fortify Christian Counseling has earned a solid reputation in the community. Many families have experienced transformative changes and report significant improvements in their children’s behavior and overall well-being. Summer can be a bustling, exciting time filled with vacations, outdoor activities, and family adventures. However, amidst the chaos, it’s essential to keep faith at the heart of your family life. Even on busy summer evenings, taking a few moments for spiritual practices can strengthen your spiritual bonds and deepen your walk with Christ. Here are five simple ideas that you and your family can try this summer.

1. Scripture Readings. Select a verse or story that resonates with the season or something your family is experiencing. Read the passage together, then invite each family member to share what God is speaking to them or how they feel called to apply it in their lives.

2. Gratitude Reflections. Gather everyone in a circle and take turns expressing what they are thankful for that day. Linking gratitude to God’s blessings encourages a thankful heart and reminds the family of God’s goodness. You could also add a brief prayer, thanking God for His provisions and asking for His guidance.

3. Family Prayer Time. Keep a prayer list handy- this could include family members, friends, community needs, or specific challenges everyone is facing. Spend a few minutes praying together, encouraging each person to speak aloud or silently lift up their requests. This practice not only deepens faith but also helps children learn the importance of prayer in daily life.

4. Family Devotional Activities. For a more creative approach, consider using devotionals that incorporate fun activities or thought-provoking discussion questions. Many available resources incorporate puzzles, crafts, or storytelling, making devotion time engaging and memorable. Even just 10-15 minutes can have a lasting impact when centered on God’s Word.

5. Family Prayer Walks. Consider prayer walks around your neighborhood or backyard. As you walk, pray aloud together, praising God for His creation and asking for His guidance. This combines physical activity with spiritual reflection, making it a dynamic way to end the day.

Summer evenings don’t have to be rushed or disconnected from faith. By incorporating some simple spiritual practices, your family can grow closer to God, celebrate His blessings, and set a Christ-centered tone for the rest of the season. Even amidst busy plans, those quiet moments together can become a treasured part of your family’s spiritual journey.

Healthy Living

According to the National Alliance for Eating Disorders and the National Eating Disorders Association, 30 million people in the United States struggle with eating disorders. Sarabeth Bozeman, MA, ALC with Still Waters Counseling and Education Center explains that “eating disorders are different than just unhealthy eating habits in that they are characterized by a persistent disturbance of eating or eating-related behavior that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food and that significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning.” Bozeman is passionate about helping clients find hope and healing from eating disorders since she struggled with an eating disorder beginning at the age of 14.

Sarabeth Bozeman
Sarabeth Bozeman, MC, ALC, provides therapy in-person at Still Waters Mtn. Brook location and online anywhere in Alabama.

Treating Eating Disorders. “Eating disorder treatment options will vary based on your geographic location, insurance coverage, the type of eating disorder, the level of care needed, and many other factors,” Bozeman shares adding that she believes the best psychological treatment is cognitive-behavioral therapy “which involves self-monitoring of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to the eating disorder.” Where does faith come in? “I’ve found that implementing Biblical truths and wisdom often provides deeper restoration by offering perspective and truth to those experiencing preoccupations with food, dissatisfaction with one’s body shape or weight, disordered thinking, distorted body image, or those paralyzed with an obsessive fear of weight gain,” Bozeman says. If the client struggling with an eating disorder indicates interest in incorporating faith in their counseling, Bozeman often shares her favorite Bible verses for this topic including Matthew 6:5, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, and 1 Timothy 4:4-5.

Still Waters logoPower of Therapy. “I was inspired to pursue a career in counseling through the journey of recognizing my spiritual gift as well as God placing the desire in my heart, which I wholly believe is to be a listening ear and gentle spirit to those seeking support in a time of need or on their own journey of self-discovery and growth,” Bozeman says. As a mental health counselor, she works with individuals ages 10 and up. She has experience treating clients with relationship issues, suicidal ideations, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, stress, and more. Bozeman’s faith impacts how she interacts with her clients. “When providing Christian counseling, Biblical truth is integrated with other evidence-based modalities, and prayer is used as an intervention,” Bozeman explains. To anyone considering seeking counseling for an eating disorder or other struggles, she encourages them to know that “healing is open and available to you whenever you are ready.” To learn more about Still Waters Counseling and Education Center, visit www.mystillwaters.org, email [email protected], or call 205-825-1423. Healthy Living

A distracted driver swerves in front of you. You yell, “Stay in your lane!” In marriage, these words, spoken or held back, reveal the inner thoughts of the heart. What happens when your husband veers off from his area of expertise and does something to cause a fender bender in your marriage? Consider how your strengths and deficiencies are necessary in marriage. Keep in mind it is not always the large things that cause marital frustrations, such as neglecting to pay the mortgage. Sometimes, it is the small things. To illustrate, you put rolls in the oven to warm up, then forget about them until the smoke detector goes off, leaving mounds of black ash. Here are a couple of truths to consider when one of you wanders beyond your area of knowledge or experience.

Recognize You Are Different. Not all roads are made the same. Some roads are made of gravel, asphalt, or brick; others consist of dirt or cobblestone. The road has one purpose, no matter the composition—to help you travel from one place to the other. The same is true of you and your husband. Though different, you are both important and useful in your marriage. Neither you nor your mate were created as a reprint. God designed you to process in unique ways. Understanding this simple truth can help you navigate the differences. When one of you moves outside your place of comfort, give each other room for error and practice forgiveness, just as Christ forgave you. Colossians 3:13 states, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Recognize You Are Not Always Right. Ouch! Is that statement hard to accept? Who wants to be wrong? It feels better to be right. To admit fault requires a healthy dose of humility. When you or your spouse get on the wrong side, use it as an opportunity for growth and move forward. Bear in mind human beings are imperfect. Practice Colossians 3:14, which encourages love and unity. Stay alert. Discord arises when you least expect it. Realize one of you will change lanes and cause a crash that disrupts marital harmony. Avoid inflicting verbal wounds when mistakes are made. Instead, pursue the common goal of peace. When you drift off, steer your marriage back on course.

Laugh together when you can and stay in your lane for a smooth and peaceful ride.
