Stressed Out? 3 Ways to Find Rest in the Middle of a Busy World

Healthy Living

“Busy.” It is the common response to the courteous question of, “How are you doing?” The busy nature of our lives has evolved from a hole from which to dig oneself out to a social status that helps to define our importance. We are busy because we are needed. We are busy because our lives are important. We are busy because our culture has elevated the life-sucking problem of busyness to the mark of success.

Throughout the Bible, the Scriptures present a picture of rest. On the seventh day of creation, the Lord rested. The author of the book of Hebrews invites us as followers of Jesus to join Him in rest when he says: “So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his” (Hebrews 4:9-10 ESV). So, what are some truths that we need to cling to if we are to run from our stress and busyness into the rest of God?

Recognize that God Is in Control. In order to rest, we must realize that we are not on the throne of our lives and of the universe. God is on the throne. He is the One who is ruling and reigning in the world. He has our past, present, and future in His hands which He is working out by His sovereign plan for His glory and our good.

Remember that God Is at Work. In order to rest, we must remember that God is at work. So often, we want to take things into our hands that only God can do. Only God can heal the sick, change someone’s heart and attitudes, and bring people to come to know Him. We so frequently stress out about things that are God’s work and not our own.

Rest in Your Place as His Beloved. Resting begins by remembering whose you are and what God has done for you. Because of the gospel, we have been rescued from our own failures to be a good person, have it all together, and to follow God. We have been made perfect because of Jesus’ work for us at the cross. We are a beloved child of God. His love for us comes not from our performance for Him but because of His endless grace.

Today, take a moment to breathe out stress and rest in grace. You are in much stronger hands than you realize!

Healthy Living

“When a family is expecting a new baby, you will often hear the parents say, ‘We don’t care if the baby is a boy or girl as long as the baby is healthy.’ Health and wellness are important if you are two days old or 82 years young,” says First Baptist Church Trussville’s Seasoned Adult Ministry pastor, Bob Smith whose senior adult members have committed to hosting a free health and wellness event on Thursday March 21. From 3-6 p.m. area physicians and other medical professionals will be on hand to help educate on heart issues, cancer, joint replacement, anxiety, Alzheimer’s and more. “No matter your age, there will be educational information and resources available for you or for someone you love,” says Smith. Faith at Work

Brought to you by: White Plume Technologies, www.whiteplume.com

I heard a wise saying one time, “I may have an investment into the solution but I’m not the solution. Our biggest frustrations can come from trying to fix something that only God can do.” Not believing that God will fix it, is where a person starts to get off track. Look at the story of the twelve spies in Numbers 13:26-33, where the spies were giving Moses an account of the promise land. They were so afraid that they could never overcome the enemy holding the land.

When unbelief creeps into our lives, just as with the spies, we can see three things occur.

1.We get depressed. In verse 33, see them down and out when they say, “we are just grasshoppers” when comparing to the size of the enemy.

2.We begin to judge and complain. In verse 31 they began complaining and spreading a negative report.

3.We begin to blame other people and eventually even God for the situation.

So how does unbelief develop? It starts when a person chooses to believe the circumstances that are before them rather than the promises of God or God’s Word. When we look at the mountains of our circumstances, many times it can start to overwhelm us which then leads us to developing an inner image of defeat. This gets re-enforced when our mind forgets what we have already seen God do in our past. An unbelieving heart ignores the evidence of God’s voice and track record of our past just as the Israelites did after all that God had just done to get them out of Egypt. The result? They doubted that they could ever enter the promise land.

What really happens is FEAR. Fear of the mountains of circumstances causes us to become self-centered/self-reliant and disobedient. Our faith is put back into our own strengths and abilities. Our old sinful nature (vs our spirit led nature) resurrects to believing that I must take control back from God and DO SOMETHING! That I must fully understand what I am seeing and how it can be fixed. Unfortunately, that never works. For help with this topic or many more, call Transformation Ministries at 205-991-4988 and come seek counseling. We offer Christian counseling as a resource to all churches and we minister at no cost to the receiver.

Encouraging Word

In John 14:6, Jesus says, “. . . I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me.”  Jesus is announcing that He is the one and only!

The WAY. Jesus begins by saying He is the way. He was acknowledging that only through Him does sinful man have access to Almighty God. He is not “a way” to God, He is “the way” to God. There are not many religious avenues to God; there is only “1 Way” to God.

What qualifies Him to make that statement?

  1. He is the eternal Son of God (John 1:1-2).
  2. He is God in the flesh (John 1:14).
  3. He had a supernatural birth (Matthew 1:20-23).
  4. He lived a sinless life (II Corinthians 5:21).
  5. He paid the debt for our sin by dying on the cross (Philippians 2:6-11; Romans 6:23).
  6. He was resurrected (Matthew 28:5-6).
  7. He ascended back to heaven (Acts 1:9-11).
  8. He is seated at God’s right hand interceding for us (Romans 8:34).
  9. He is preparing a place for us and coming back to get us (John 14:2-3).

This qualifies Jesus to be the only way!

The TRUTH. Jesus also said He was the truth. Truth is defined as that which is accurate; pure knowledge without any mixture of error. Truth is that which is factual; honest; real; absolute; having integrity. John 8:32 says, “and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Without truth you have deception, delusion, deceit, falsehood, fable and fantasy. Jesus is the truth!

The LIFE. Jesus then refers to Himself as the life. John 1:4 says, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” Jesus offers us a new life (II Corinthians 5:17), an abundant, complete life (John 10:10) and eternal life (John 3:16; John 11:25-26).

Let me encourage you to come to Jesus and make Him your personal Savior and Lord! He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Jesus is the one and only!

The Briarwood Christian School Bass Team won their first team tournament of the year on February 9 at the ASABFA Regional at Lake Martin. “This has been a culmination of a lot of hard work and team work,” says Jay Mathews who coaches the six-boat varsity team (12 anglers) and 35 club members. This is the 8th season for the Briarwood Bass Team which competes year-round. The team also finds time to host their own fishing television show, “Winning Edges” which airs on the Jimmy Houston Network (JHL.TV). “It is totally produced by the students,” explains Coach Mathew.

Another big win for the team came on National Signing Day when team member Grayson Morris signed to attend the President’s Outdoor Scholars Program at the University of Montevallo. Grayson’s accomplishments include winning the Bassmaster National Championship in June 2018 with fellow angler Tucker Smith. The two will defend the title again this season.

Big win for the Briarwood Christian School Bass Team at Lake Martin. The team’s next big tournament is March 9 on Lake Eufaula.

Clearbranch UMC in Trussville started live streaming their services in December 2018 and are seeing a growing number of individuals joining them on line to worship.

It happens to the best of us. We decide we are going to be in church each Sunday, but sometimes life gets in the way. Things like vacations, sick kids or car trouble keep us from worshipping with your church family. Luckily, we can pull out our phones, open our laptops or activate the streaming box on our TV to livestream the services.

In today’s age of “convenience attendance,” online worshippers have become one of the fastest growing segments of a church’s membership. Clearbranch United Methodist Church (UMC) in Trussville began live streaming on Christmas Eve 2018 and weekly views of their Sunday morning worship services average around 350 a week.

These are good numbers to add to Sunday morning weekly attendance, but the REAL ministry of online church streaming emerges DURING the service itself.  Browsing through the comments section of any Clearbranch service stream shows members that are home dealing with frustration or hardship. They interact with points that the pastor is making in his sermon. They ask for prayers over things they are enduring. These people would love to be there in person, but they simply cannot make it physically to the church building. The church has to take Jesus to where they are instead.

The church’s spread through the world in a digital way can take many forms. Clearbranch uses livestreaming through services like Facebook or on their website. Anyone can download their ROKU app and watch services live on their TV. They also offer the complete services as “audio only” options through Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Clearbranch also creates original content each week on its YouTube channel that acts as a follow up to each week’s sermon from the previous Sunday.

Basically, the church has to accept that there are people hungry for Jesus, and, due to one thing or another, may not darken the door to the sanctuary. They may have been hurt by the church at some point and have issues being there in person.  Being able to watch from where they are, on their terms, allows the church to do its job and continue to minister to the world. Options like livestreams or podcasts allow the curious or broken to be a part of the church and hopefully grow in their walk with Christ.

Jesus is not, nor has he ever been, primarily interested in getting people saved. Salvation is but a first step, a means to a desired end. What was Jesus interested in? Discipleship. A thoughtful reading of the great commission reveals that Jesus is interested in creating a people who follow his teachings, not simply a group of people who individually accept Christ. He intends for the gospel to be lived.

In his new book, Becoming a Just Church, Adam L. Gustine is calling us to live as the people of God by extending justice and life into the world. In the kingdom of God, justice is not about retribution, it’s about righteousness – and Jesus tells us what righteousness looks like. It is about setting the world aright. It is about replacing hatred with love, discord with peace, and greed with generosity. It is about welcoming the other, ministering to the poor, and bringing relief to the oppressed. A disciple of Jesus desires the well-being of everyone, regardless of their social, political, religious, ethnic, or economic status. In summary, we are to treat others the same way we would want to be treated, regardless of who they are.

Becoming a Just Church is a powerful reminder that Jesus wants his people to live prophetically and proleptically. We are called to live in anticipation of the Kingdom, not only by resisting unrighteousness, but by also joyfully creating righteousness. We are subversive. We are hopeful. We are agents of peace and grace.

We are disciples of Jesus.
