The Grand Awakening: Grandparenting Matters

“Why haven’t we thought of this before?”  Gerry approached me during one of our Grandparenting Matters seminars.  Dignified, neatly dressed, with perfect silvery-gray hair, he introduced himself as the chairman of the board of elders of the host church.  He choked back emotion as he bared his thoughts: “I have led the board of this church for years. I’ve taught Bible classes most of my adult life.  I also am a grandfather who dearly loves his grandkids. But it has never occurred to me to think through responsibilities as a grandparent. Why haven’t I thought of this before?”

Larry Fowler will be one of the featured speakers at The Legacy Grandparenting Summit hosted by Shades Mountain Baptist Church, www.legacycoalition.com/summit

That morning, Gerry was awakened. Like him, most Christian grandparents love their grandkids dearly, go to their activities, give the parents a break, and support however they can. By the only standard they have heard—the cultural standard—they deem themselves to be good grandparents. But there is another standard—a higher standard—that most have never considered: the biblical standard. They are asleep to that, because they’ve never heard a message on grandparenting, never read a book, never attended a class or a seminar. Like Gerry, they are asleep to what the Bible says on grandparenting.

But now an awakening is underway; a movement is sweeping through our nation’s Christian grandparents. They are awakening to their biblical responsibilities, and to their potential impact in the lives of their grandchildren. This awakening is transforming relationships and giving new vision and purpose for the latter half of life.

Here is what is happening: grandparents are finding ways to stay connected with grandkids who live at a distance. They’re strengthening or repairing relationships with their adult children, so their impact on future generations can be greater.

They are praying more purposefully, writing their spiritual memoirs, and creating rites-of-passage for their young teenage grandkids; holding family camps for the grandkids, purchasing Bibles for them (and in some cases, customizing those with their own notes). They’re blessing their grandchildren, telling their own faith stories to them, and establishing spiritual traditions.

Church leaders embrace the movement as well. Hundreds of churches have now established grandparenting ministries, but we are praying for thousands. And others are contributing; now there are sermons, seminars, classes, and resources—all to equip grandparents for their important role.

We are praying that—not thousands—millions of Christian grandparents in America will see the higher standard and take the significant step from being a good grandparent to a “great” grandparent. Will you join us?

Save the date! The Legacy Grandparenting Summit—the only national conference on Christian grandparenting—is coming to Birmingham, Alabama on March 18-19, 2021.  It’s your opportunity to experience this movement for yourself.  Don’t miss it!

Best Books 0620 Practice of Godliness

Best Books

The Practice of Godliness
Jerry Bridges was the author of more than a dozen Christian living books before his passing in 2016.

I recently participated in a discussion about which books, aside from the Bible, had influenced us the most. Among my top five is an older title which I still recommend to guests at our bookstore. It doesn’t matter what denomination you are from, how mature you are in your faith, or how nuanced your literary taste is, The Practice of Godliness (Navpress) by Jerry Bridges is a book which I can suggest without hesitation to any reader.

It’s been almost forty years since The Practice of Godliness was published, so it obviously isn’t new. It is, however, one of the best books I’ve read on the subject on living the Christian life. Every Christian is called upon to be intentional about practicing godliness, and the scriptures tell us what such a life looks like. Humility, contentment, joyfulness, self-control, and faithfulness are only a few of the virtues which Jerry Bridges explores as he reminds us that aspiring to live a godly life is not optional for those who wish to follow Jesus. Peacemaking, patience, and gentleness are mandated for all who proclaim Christ as King. Last of all, there is love, by which all men will know we are truly followers of Jesus.

The fruit of the Spirit, the evidence of genuine discipleship, has nothing to do with power. Nor is it about the number of people we’ve evangelized, the amount of verses we’ve memorized, or the amount of time or financial support we’ve offered in service of our church. One can excel in all these functions and be a deeply ungodly person. The depths of our commitment to live a Christian life is directly connected to the depths of our love and compassion. Without love, we are nothing.

For three reflective days at Renny’s lake house in Heber Springs, Arkansas, the three childhood friends reunite and examine life, love, marriage, and the ties that bind, even though Celia’s personal story has yet to be healed.

When the past arrives at the lake house door in the form of her old boyfriend, Celia revisits the life she’d tried to outrun. As the idyllic coming of age on her family’s ancestral grounds in bucolic Como, Mississippi unfolds, Celia realizes there is no better place to accept what happened in young adulthood than in this circle of introspective friends who have remained beside her throughout the years.

Theirs is a friendship that can talk any life sorrow into a comic tragedy, even Celia’s great heartbreak over the loss of her childhood friend, Little Tea. But changing times are full of surprises. From them, will Celia learn that friendship has the ability to triumph over history?

Publisher’s Note

As we remember and honor our fathers this month, my Daddy’s Big Hugs are at the top of my gratitude list. Something about the way he wraps me in his arms, melts away the worries of this world and replaces them with a blanket of security. During this time of quarantine, I have missed those hugs, but I am so very thankful to still have my father in my life and look forward to one of those awesome hugs soon.

The challenges we have all faced these last few months have “taken” ‘from us but what have they “given us”?

For me it is gratitude for all those hundreds of hugs my Daddy has given me throughout my life. It’s the daily walks I have been able to have with my sons abruptly home from college.

It’s the family “zoom” calls- something I had never done before quarantine!

It’s the live concert my brother performed from the balcony of his home in San Diego that I was able to watch from home in Alabama and “cheer” him on through group Facetime!

What about you? Through this challenging time what has God given you?

We would love to hear from you! Share with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter or send us an email we can share. Let’s encourage one another by telling the stories of how God is at work in our lives right now!

When was the last time an entire day went according to your plans? We set goals and make plans for events we want to happen. Then, our lives take their own course. From traffic jams to a terrifying diagnosis, life refuses to adhere to our plans. What then? Do we look at these detours as road blocks to our happiness?

FreeFall
Rhonda Robinson’s book, FreeFall is available from NewHopePublishers.com and your favorite book retailers.

As beings made in the image of God, we grieve when those we love are separated from us. We detest evil. Our hearts ache when our children hurt. In short, we suffer. The course of our lives seldom follows the charts we draw. We can’t control the circumstances a new day brings. As the seasons of our lives change, and circumstances we didn’t want invade, they leave behind a trail of mental clutter. Without realizing it, we can become mental-hoarders holding onto hurtful thoughts, tucking away lies as if they were truth. When that happens, we can no longer tell the difference between trash and treasures, truth from our own deceptions. By holding onto toxic thoughts and feelings, as if they were valuable, your mind becomes noxious to your spirit.

Yet the sunrise brings the promise of new beginnings. Each new day is celebrated with its magnificence. Our minds are also created to renew each morning. We serve the God of new beginnings. Sunrise Reflections is a daily habit of taking out your mental garbage. This simple practice clears the cares of the world and creates pathways to connect you with the God of the universe.

  • Commit to writing three full pages or thirty minutes each morning. Preferably, within the first thirty minutes of waking, sit down to write.
  • Write, in longhand with a pen, whatever comes to your mind. Anything. Everything. Spill your thoughts on paper just as they are. Dump the mental clutter on the paper.
  • As your mind is set free, your thoughts change. Your spirit takes the lead, and your pen becomes its voice. Let it flow freely. You will be surprised what is allowed to emerge.

The unfailing love God has for us is demonstrated with a new day’s grand opening. There is no better time to greet your Creator. By renewing your mind with each new sunrise, the still small voice inside is magnified and your spirit gains strength to lead. His plans become yours as the new day unfolds—whatever it may bring.

Valleydale Christian Academy Valedictorian Jerica Snowden is a scholar/athlete with competitive volleyball and will attend Samford University in the Fall.

In formal caps and gowns, seniors recently graduated from Valleydale Christian Academy on Valleydale Road. The ceremony was adjusted for social distancing but still included a traditional message from Valedictorians Jerica Snowden and Cameron Meredith and a celebratory tossing of caps. 44 seniors graduated May 22, 2020 after finishing an unusual spring semester. “The students who were in classes on campus had to go virtual with all of our teachers – a challenge  – but they’ve made it. So proud of all of them!” exclaimed Valleydale Christian Director, Susan Hubbard. “Seniors 2020 and the staff at Valleydale Academy will have many unusual memories to share in the years to come about the year of the virus!”

Valleydale Christian Director, Susan Hubbard, along with Valedictorians, Cameron Meredith and Jerica Snowden, address the school’s Class of 2020.

As a part of her Valedictorian speech, Jerica Snowden shared with her classmates, “With every obstacle that comes your way, my advice is to face it head on and be yourself. Don’t’ be afraid to make the decision that is best for you, no matter how tough something is. Never give up because you are more than capable of getting through it.”

Generations of veterans have served and sacrificed to protect America and ensure its freedom. Opened in Feb. of 2014, the National Veterans Shrine at the American Village in Montevallo, Ala. strives to honor veterans and preserve their stories of bravery for future generations. Patterned after Philadelphia’s Carpenters Hall, the Shrine houses major sculpture and paintings by nationally-renowned artists depicting our veterans’ service and sacrifice for America and its freedom. Outside on the brick plaza, buried beneath a sculpture depicting liberty, are soils taken from blood-stained battlefields around the globe where Americans have paid the price of liberty.

The Shrine also houses the Veterans Register of Honor, a website and database containing the photographs, biographical sketches and stories of veterans in every generation since the American Revolution who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

Visitors are able to select and view personalized multimedia presentations honoring individual veterans at eight computer kiosks located within the Shrine.

Members of the Leadership Shelby County Class of 2019 seek to raise awareness regarding the opportunity to honor veterans by entering them into the Veterans Register of Honor database.
Members of the Leadership Shelby County Class of 2019 seek to raise awareness regarding the opportunity to honor veterans by entering them into the Veterans Register of Honor database.

The American Village staff encourage veterans and active members of the U.S. Armed Forces to enter their service and biographical information, and to upload photographs and videos on www.veteransregisterofhonor.com. A group with the Leadership Shelby County Class (LSC) of 2019 realized this has not been an easy task for many veterans and their families due to factors such as age and technology challenges. This LSC group began a community service project in the fall of 2018 to help the American Village promote the Veterans Register of Honor, raise awareness within their respective communities and increase the number of entries in the database. Volunteers have gathered contacts from a variety of sectors including funeral homes, nursing homes and veteran service organizations.

Whether you know a veteran or are a veteran yourself, the Veterans Register of Honor is a great way to preserve your service for generations to come. Your sacrifice and dedication to America is appreciated and deserves to be told. Please visit www.veteransregisterofhonor.comto start uploading your story today. †

Protect yourself and your family with Face Masks with Faith while also sharing a message of hope with those you encounter.

Birmingham native Iris Morgan saw a need and continues to fill it. After the opening of her salon on Highway 280 was delayed due to COVID-19, she decided to start making cloth masks to generate income and spread hope in her community. Scripture is sewn onto most of the masks she makes. She embroiders roughly 30-50 masks a day and because of the demand, she decided to outsource the making of masks to other local women. “I thought if I could put Scripture on them, it would get the Word out. To me, it’s a statement of faith,” Morgan adds, “People will have to look at the Scripture and go look it up since not everyone knows what that Scripture verse says. The masks are a witness and that is the purpose.” Because of social distancing, it can be harder to share our faith with people, but Morgan believes masks with statements of faith are a great way to share the hope we have.

The main Scripture Morgan embroiders on her masks is Psalm 91. Other verses include John 3:16, Isaiah 35:4, Luke 12:25 and Isaiah 41:10. Morgan offers masks for children as well and she often embroiders statements of faith including “Jesus loves me” and “Child of God.” Morgan desires to donate as many masks as possible. Her team has already donated more than 70 masks to the Pediatric Unit at Children’s of Alabama for nurses, doctors, and patients and plans to donate more. Face Masks with Faith has also given more than 200 masks to local nursing homes and are working with the City of Birmingham to provide masks for any City employee that needs one. In addition, Morgan’s team has given more than 6,000 yards of elastic to local churches so they can make masks, as well. Morgan shares that each mask purchase allows them to donate more.

Morgan’s hope and prayer during this time is that “More people will turn to God. More people will pray. More people will realize this is the time to get closer to God and if they don’t know Him, that they will come to know Him and give their lives to Him.” To learn more and order Face Masks with Faith, visit www.facemaskswithfaith.com.
