The Power of Paint

Our House

One theme continuing out of 2020 and into 2021 is the Super-Hot Real Estate Market. If you’ve been contemplating selling your home and vacillating on which items you should improve to have a better experience, don’t forget about paint. Last month, we focused on the importance of pruning before spring growth and making your home more visible. You want buyers to see your home, but if you’re starting to see areas needing paint, then it only makes sense to have a home assessment.

Our experience has shown painting provides the best return on investment as any other dollar you could spend on your home. Paint sets the stage for curb appeal and also “invites” buyers to walk through rooms while touring. If a buyer doesn’t stop to focus on deferred maintenance items, then they are more likely to think about how they would live in the home and/or how much competition they might have before offering.

You’ve heard the saying that you only get one chance at a first impression. In a buyer’s mind, if a home requires paint then it gives  the impression that the home has been left unattended.  Sometimes, a magic eraser or simple touchup is all that’s needed. Other times, an expert painter’s touchup techniques can save thousands and it won’t look as if the areas have been touched up. You might even want to change shutter colors or a few rooms in your house too.  Buyers usually take the position that an entire room (or even the whole house) must be painted if there are repeated signs of noticeable excess wear.

Yes, this is a seller’s market and there is a good chance you will receive an offer, but will it be the offer that you want to receive? The difference in an upfront investment is far outweighed by out-of-pocket expenses a buyer will estimate on the back end. Buyers tend to take greater notice in other things requiring attention once they’ve focused on paint. Before long, a simple room painting leads to “that roof cost,” and more.

Do yourself a favor and avoid larger expenses and a lower sales price after placing your home up for sale by investing in your home beforehand. Simply picking a neutral color that already works with your home’s features can create the impression of a home being more updated than it actually is. Our clients are always amazed at the before and after transformation and often make a comment like, “If we had done this sooner, we could have enjoyed it and considered staying.” Another important aspect of getting the biggest return on your investment is addressing curb appeal. Barons field 2

Are We There Yet?

Take the family out for a great game of baseball at Regions Field on Saturday February 27, 2021. Our community’s beloved Birmingham Barons won’t be taking the field yet this season- BUT their management is making it possible for two local high school teams to play on the very same field that the Birmingham Barons call home. The noon game will be the “home” opener for the Fultondale High School Wildcats who are facing the Ramsay High School Rams.

Barons Birmingham Sign
Watch the Fultondale Wildcats take on the Ramsey Rams at Regions Field on Saturday February 27. Gates open at 11am and game begins at Noon. Purchase tickets at the game or through GoFan. Proceeds will support the Fultondale Baseball Team.

Due to the recent tornado damage sustained to Fultondale High School’s home baseball field, the team has been forced to move their practices and home games 20 miles away to Tarrant Field. To assist in this incredibly tough time for the club, Regions Field offered the Wildcats the chance to play their home opener at Regions Field. “Our prayers and thoughts continue for our Fultondale neighbors as they recover from the recent tornado,” said Barons President and General Manager Jonathan Nelson. “Knowing Fultondale’s High School Baseball Team had their 2020 season cut short due to COVID, and then to not have a home season at their ballpark due to this devasting tornado is heartbreaking. We are honored to help Fultondale kick-off their season against Ramsay High and want to make this a special experience for Fultondale’s student-athletes as well the entire Fultondale community.”

With their home field destroyed, Fultondale is living by the motto “Home is Where the Heart is”. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the team has decided to bring the bases and the home plate from their home field to every game. This act represents the pride the team has for their community, and to always remain Fultondale Strong. “We dug up home plate and are taking it everywhere we go because our heart is back at our home field, wherever we are fortunate to play will now become our home.” Said Fultondale Head Coach Michael Franklin. “We really hope to have the community come out to Regions Field and support the boys on February 27th.”

Tickets for the Fultondale’s home opener can be purchased at the GoFan digital ticketing site for $6. Fans will also be able to purchase tickets at Regions Field on the day of the game. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go directly back to the Fultondale Baseball Team. As with all events at Regions Field, the facility will be enforcing all social distancing and safety regulations set forth by the City of Birmingham and the Jefferson County Department of Health Department. †

Our House

Everyone in the South has been patiently anticipating the awakening of spring––and it’s here! We can finally put our oversized scarves and chunky boots away, and reach for our shorts and favorite t-shirts. Though we’re all collectively excited about the positive things that spring brings––picnics, walks in the park, warm weather––we must not forget that pest numbers exponentially increase as the weather warms up.  Here are a few of the most common creepies and crawlies you’ll see during spring in Alabama.

Spiders. We figured we’d get the ball rolling by introducing the thing that fuels the nightmares of most people: spiders. As you’re probably aware, most spiders are no cause for concern––besides their horrifying eight eyes and spindly legs, they’re basically harmless. However, a few poisonous spiders are native to Alabama––black widows, brown widows, and brown recluses––and should be taken seriously if you come across them. If you do happen to come across these venomous creatures, make sure to call us right away.

Termites. In Alabama, termites begin to make their appearance right as spring is starting––they love warm weather. These little bugs are particularly destructive, and can cost you thousands of dollars in damage to your home. If you come across a termite, or suspect an infestation, don’t hesitate to contact us! Termites are incredibly destructive, and waiting around can result in irreparable damage to your home.

Wasps. Unlike docile bumblebees, wasps will not hesitate to sting when provoked. What’s worse, thousands of wasps can swarm from a single hive. Since wasps nest in the ground, it’s a good idea to wear closed toed shoes in your yard if you suspect a wasp colony. As always, call us and we’ll handle it so you can go back to running around barefoot.

Ants. Like most insects, ants are cold-blooded and thrive when the temperature outside rises. After a winter season of inactivity, ants come to life in the spring to start building colonies. Similar to wasps, ants will bite when provoked as a defense mechanism. We understand the frustration of finding a line of ants trailing up and down the foundation of countertops, baseboards, and other places inside of your home––and we’re here to help! After calling your trusty pest control company, we also recommend getting rid of any food scraps left in your kitchen and keeping pet food off of the floor to prevent attracting a colony. Remember, where there’s one ant––there are many.

Spring Is Here- Is Your Home Pest-Proof? As the weather continues to warm up in Alabama, more and more pests will start appearing and making their new homes––make sure your home isn’t their next destination. If you suspect a pest problem, call the experts over at Vulcan Termite & Pest Control––we’re ready to help.

Rachael Trice
Racheal Trice

It is with great pleasure that I recommend Mrs. Racheal Trice for the 2021 Teachers Touching Lives Award. Mrs. Trice has exhibited all of the aspects that I have wanted in a leader as well as a physical education teacher. She is passionate about students and has a determination to grow each day. Her colleagues often depend on her for guidance and partnership. Mrs. Trice has served as a mentor to new teachers as well as being an integral part of our interview committee. She also has done a fantastic job while serving as our FCA and First Priority Sponsor.

Mrs. Trice is the type of role model that every school strives to accrue. She is well rounded and a complete people person. Her colleagues would describe her as genuinely thoughtful, hard working, and an integral peer mentor. Parents trust her immensely, which speaks volumes to her character and ability to work with all people. Students and players respect her and often seek her advice on academics and athletic needs. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Trice works with students as head cheerleading coach and head softball coach. On behalf of her colleagues, I would highly recommend her for this award.

Chelsea Shanks
Chelsea Shanks

Mrs. Shanks is my son’s special education teacher. Noah has Sensory Processing Disorder which comes with a learning disability. Mrs. Shanks has a precious group of 14 students in the 4th and 5th grade. This year has been especially hard for all teachers. But that has not caused Mrs. Shanks to not inspire learning, drive her students to be independent, and create an environment where they feel loved and important. For us, the time not in school was devastating. My child has struggled to write, read, and comprehend math. His was progressing so much when everything came to a stop last March. And the regression for him was bad. But when he was able to return to traditional class, Mrs. Shanks dove right in and got Noah back up to where he left off last March. She did this while also assuring us that our son would do great. Now Noah can write independently and legibly. He is reading so much and comprehends it! And gradually, math is starting to make sense to him. But what touches me so much is he has found the subject that is really his passion and that is Social Studies. Mrs. Shanks has made this subject fun and interesting much like every subject she teaches. Noah is excited about each new topic that they learn about in class. He is inspired to work hard and to push himself where he has weaknesses. What amazes me is that she has many children all with different needs. She has a plan for each of them. She has high expectations for each of them. And I don’t think there is one child that has come through her class that hasn’t benefited and grown under her leadership. We are blessed that she is part of our village. I believe she deserves so much recognition for her tireless work in Special Education.

Teachers Touching Lives

Andrea Burke
Andrea Burk

When you get a kindergarten teacher that has been teaching for 36 years, you know one of two things to be true: she’s either crazy or your child has just been blessed with the woman by whom all future teachers will be measured. With Andrea Burk, you get the latter.
Once your child becomes one of “Burk’s Bunch”, they have just entered not only a classroom of learners, but a family full of love, laughter, wonder, imagination, and dreams. Sure, Mrs. Burk can tell you of academic progress, current teaching trends, and the like, but her eyes light up when she tells you about the kindness she sees, the ability to collaborate to solve problems, or how the children take care of and love one another. She so faithfully demonstrates love, joy, patience, and forgiveness to each child that this sense of family weaves its way through to how the children treat each other.

Mrs. Burk’s energy and zest for meaningful teaching and learning NEVER slows down. With her years of experience, she could easily recycle things that have worked in the past and coast through, but she doesn’t. The last day of the first semester, when many classrooms have taken down trees and cleaned up in anticipation of the break, Andrea’s tree is still glowing, FULL of hand made ornaments, and her tables have been rearranged to transform the room into the Polar Express for one more glorious day of fun. The stories of the commitment Andrea has as she devotes herself to helping her babies love to learn are legendary throughout Helena. There was the year that she converted her room to a baseball field the last week of school to keep students engaged until the end, or the time she turned the room into a campsite- complete with thematic reading and math stations that complemented learning requirements, or the countless Mother’s Day Teas she has hosted throughout the years. All of these things are well beyond what’s required to do, but she enthusiastically does them because she LOVES her babies. This year, in a time of so many changes, fears and uncertainties, Mrs. Burk has once again made her kindergarten classroom a place of safety, wonder, imagination and learning. To the woman who sets the bar unimaginably high for all future teachers, THANK YOU, and may you be blessed over and above for all you do.
