Meet the Petite & Affectionate Talia

Talia

The Family Pet

Some of the most powerful testimonies come not from words, but from lives transformed, and that includes the lives of companion animals. Meet Talia, a radiant reminder of what love can do.

Talia
Talia is a sweet petite three-year-old girl who is crate and house trained.

Once tethered to a heavy chain, Talia spent the early days of her life confined. No freedom to explore. No warm laps to curl into. Just the weight of metal links and lonely days. But through the grace of rescue, Talia was freed from her past. She emerged with a spirit not scarred by suffering but healed by hope. Today, this beautiful, petite, three-year-old lives each moment like a love letter to her second chance.

Talia hugs her foster dad
Talia loves to receive and give affection. She is seen here hugging her foster dad.

Talia is fondly called a Velcro dog. She adores affection and returns it tenfold. Hug her, and she’ll hug you back tighter. Love her, and she’ll never let go. Her perfect day? Having a basket full of squeaky toys, a sunny backyard to run free, and a tasty bone to savor in peace. Add a doggie friend to the mix, and Talia’s joy multiplies. She’s crate and house trained, and even polite with cats. Her journey is more than a rescue story. It’s a parable of redemption.  As Scripture reminds us in Psalm 107:14 (CSB), “He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their chains apart.” Talia is ready to share cherished “never let go” moments and bless a family with all that she is!

Money Matters

Sending your child to college is an exciting milestone filled with new experiences and opportunities for them to grow. For many families, it’s also the first time your student will be managing their own money independently. With a few simple strategies, you can guide them to take control of their finances and avoid common pitfalls that trip up many college students.

1. Start with a budget. Creating a budget might sound boring, but it’s instrumental in helping your student take control of their finances. Many people use the 50/30/20 rule, which calls for putting 50% of income toward needs, 30% toward wants, and 20% toward savings and other financial goals. Encourage them to track their spending and subtract anything they pay out from their total monthly funds. This helps them know exactly how much money they have at any given time. There are plenty of free apps to help monitor expenses, or they can simply use a notebook to write down what they spend each day.

2. Guide them toward smart credit habits. That first credit card in college can be both exciting and scary for parents. The key is helping students understand how to use credit wisely by paying off their balance on time every month. This helps build a positive credit history that will help them qualify for better rates on car loans, apartments and eventually a home mortgage. Make sure your student understands that credit cards aren’t free money. It takes discipline to charge only what they can afford to pay off completely when the bill arrives.

3. Pay attention to everyday expenses. College life doesn’t have to break the bank. Remind your child to take advantage of student discounts available at restaurants, clothing and grocery stores and entertainment venues. Help them set spending limits for discretionary categories like entertainment, dining out and personal expenses. Here’s where that budget can help set clear limits to prevent overspending. It’s easier to say no to that expensive coffee or designer clothing when they know it would put them over their weekly limit.

4. Think about the future. While it might seem early to worry about life after college, making smart financial moves now can benefit them later. If your student has loans, consider encouraging them to make small payments while they’re still in school, even though they’re not required to do so. This reduces the amount of interest that builds up over time. Encourage an emergency fund, even if they can only save $25 per week.

Teaching your child to manage money in college isn’t just about helping them survive until graduation. The habits they develop now will shape their financial future for decades to come. By guiding them to start with a simple budget, use credit responsibly and make thoughtful spending choices, you’re helping set the stage for success in college and beyond.

Legal Matters

Planning for long-term care or supporting a loved one with a disability can feel overwhelming, especially when navigating complex rules about Medicaid, Social Security, and asset protection. Many Alabama families believe they must “spend down” everything they own before qualifying for government benefits, but that’s not the whole story. Pooled special needs trusts, are powerful tools that can protect benefits, preserve dignity, and offer peace of mind for you and your loved ones.

The Problem: Myths and Misconceptions

One of the biggest barriers families face is misinformation. Many assume trusts are only for the wealthy, or that once someone enters a nursing facility, all assets must be exhausted before Medicaid can help. Others worry that leaving an inheritance to a child with disabilities will disqualify them from benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid. These myths create fear and often lead families to delay planning until they’re in crisis. Without preplanning, families may watch savings dwindle, care options narrow, and benefits slip away.

The Solution: Special Needs Trusts

Trusts, specifically First-Party and Third-Party Special Needs Trusts, help bridge the gap between assets and eligibility. Both protect eligibility for government benefits while allowing funds to be used for approved expenses. Pooled trusts, like those offered by Alabama Family Trust (AFT), take this a step further by combining resources for expanded investment options while maintaining separate accounts for for each beneficiary. With pooled trusts, even families of modest means can access professional trust management. At AFT, trusts can be established for as little as $1,500, making this option accessible to low-income families as well as those with significant assets to protect.

What Trusts Can Do

Funds in a special needs trust can pay for a wide range of quality-of-life expenses that government benefits don’t cover. For individuals in nursing facilities, that might include clothes, hobby supplies, a private room, or additional caregivers. For other individuals with disabilities, trusts can cover transportation, education, therapies, recreation, or technology that fosters independence. At the same time, Medicaid and SSI remain in place to cover essentials like medical care and housing. It’s a win-win that allows families to preserve stability without sacrificing dignity.

Why Choose Alabama Family Trust

Founded as a nonprofit, Alabama Family Trust has an established history with the Ala. Medicaid Agency and the Social Security Administration. AFT serves families in all 67 counties, offering professional trustee services that include bill payment, fund management, compliance oversight, and monthly reporting. “Families often come to us believing they have to lose everything before qualifying for help,” says Lesley Byars, Executive Director of Alabama Family Trust. “Our role is to provide options, protect benefits, and give families the peace of mind that their loved one will be cared for, both now and in the future.”

G at Big Oak

Miracle Moments

Brought to you by: Community Partner Molly Maid of Birmingham, www.mollymaid.com/birmingham

Community Partner 25 Years“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” Genesis 50:20

“The greatest ‘thank you’ that I can ever hope to give to Big Oak Ranch in return for what it has given me is to raise a generation that will never need the Ranch for themselves but will have hearts and hands to maybe one day serve it in some capacity for those, like their mama, that finds Home through its gates.” These were the final words that closed Amanda’s “A Life Changed Story” that was shared just last summer with her Big Oak Ranch family. Little did she know that her teenage daughter Gracelyn (or “G” as she is lovingly referred to) was already feeling a pull to do just that.

G volunteering at Big Oak
Gracelyn is seen her volunteering her time with Big Oak Ranch.

While preparations were in motion for the Big 50th last year, Amanda inquired about G helping out on the volunteer team; “is there anything you might need G’s help for? She mentioned that she thought it would be fun to get to come up early if you guys needed her.” The answer was an easy yes, and G was officially added to the Volunteer list. Amanda and G met the Big Oak Ranch team early in the morning of our 50th Celebration and P21 Rodeo. We were expecting a sleepy teenager. Instead, G was bright-eyed and ready to work. At the Boys’ Ranch, G met our Experience Team and other volunteers, quickly jumping in. When the Big Oak Reunion and Rodeo came around, she paused the busy life of a teenager to take on tasks for the sake of her Big Oak Ranch family.

It’s a special moment when former residents come home to be involved. To have a Big Oak Ranch grandchild come home is another feeling. When those like Gracelyn, come ready to be “boots on the ground,” that surpasses a success story. That’s a generational curse truly broken. A chasm created behind the years of pain and suffering their parents endured and the stark contrast of the life they have been given as their children. That’s God declaring that what the enemy meant for harm was not only going to be turned for good in the life of Amanda, but that He would further use her children as another tool to rewrite the stories of our current children. That’s the point of this all. That’s the mission. That’s what we wake up every morning striving for.

bigstock Halloween still life with pump 98693825

Parenting Points

For many Christian families, Halloween can feel complicated. The holiday is often associated with darkness, fear, and themes that don’t align with our faith. Yet rather than avoiding the day altogether, it can be transformed into an opportunity to shine the light of Christ during it. After all, Jesus calls us to be “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), and Halloween presents a natural chance to share that light with our neighbors.

Redeem the Opportunity. Instead of seeing Halloween as something to fear, families can approach it as a strategic night when the neighborhood literally comes to their door. Few other times in the year do we have such an open invitation to meet, greet, and bless those around us. With intentionality, Christian families can use this cultural moment to point others toward God’s love and build relationships with their neighbors.

Remind People of the Power of Hope. One of the easiest ways to share Christ on Halloween is by including hope into the day. Along with candy, consider handing out Scripture cards, bookmarks with Bible verses, or small notes of encouragement reminding kids that God loves them. Everyone who comes to your door is someone who is in need of hope found only in a relationship with Jesus.

Create a Welcoming Atmosphere. Your home can serve as a beacon of warmth and joy in the neighborhood. Think of Halloween as a great time to spread joy and hope to the many neighbors who will be visiting your front door. Your goal is not to withdraw, but to invite and to welcome in a way that reflects Christ’s love.

Pray as You Go. Whether you’re handing out candy, walking the neighborhood, or hosting a gathering, pray for each person you encounter. Ask God to use these small seeds of kindness to open doors for future conversations and relationships. You would be amazed to see how God begins to orchestrate opportunities when we begin to pray for the people God has placed in our lives.

Halloween doesn’t have to be a holiday Christians shy away from—it can be a night to reflect God’s love in powerful ways and connect relationally with those God has placed around you. October 31st becomes a strategic opportunity to proclaim the truth: that in Jesus, the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Healthy Living

Dr. Sandra Bruno, MS, DMin, LMFT, AADC felt drawn to help others from an early age. “I’ve always felt the inclination to support people who are lonely or outsiders,” Bruno shares, adding that she believes this desire to encourage and comfort others is part of the skill set God gave her. This calling led her to become a marriage and family therapist.

Still Waters logoPower of Counseling. For over 27 years, Bruno has seen counseling help people transform their lives. “I’ve witnessed firsthand the positive impact of therapy on individuals and couples. I’ve seen people find relief from anxiety and depression. I’ve observed people gain control over addictive behaviors.” Bruno is passionate about guiding her clients through the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model of therapy. “This model is a holistic framework that integrates four aspects- biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors- to strengthen and help an individual understand their health and wellbeing,” Bruno explains.

Dr. Sandra Bruno, MS, DMin, LMFT, AADC works with a variety of issues including anxiety, grief, depression, addictions, self-esteem and more. To schedule an appointment with her, visit www.mystillwaters.org.
  • Biological. Bruno shares that for this component, she concentrates on the physical. “I encourage my clients to eat healthy foods, drink water, get their sleep, and exercise.” She adds that there are multiple studies that show when someone takes care of their physical body, it impacts mental health and emotions.
  • Psychological. This component pertains to mental health and emotions. Bruno asks questions like: “What are we telling ourselves? Are we encouraging ourselves and being positive? Are we able to control anxious thoughts?”
  • Social. Bruno explains that this component centers around healthy relationships. “These relationships can be with family or friends, church community, as well as regular community.” Bruno encourages her clients to surround themselves with positive people.
  • Spiritual. The final component of this model focuses on beliefs and practices. “This is our relationship with the Lord. This needs to be our number one, in my opinion,” Bruno says.

This approach to counseling “is based on the premise that a client’s overall wellbeing and stability are achieved when all four of those four components are utilized to nurture and take us towards a more healthy us,” Bruno explains. She equips her clients with coping mechanisms for each of the components.

Seasons trees

Healthy Living

As autumn paints the world in hues of gold and crimson, something sacred unfolds . . . trees release their leaves, not because they’re dying, but because they’re preparing for renewal. There’s a purpose in the letting go. Beneath the shedding, roots grow deeper, and rest makes way for restoration. What seems like loss is often the first step toward producing something new.

Seasons treesMany of us resist seasons of change. We hold tightly to what’s familiar, even when it hurts—old wounds, unhealthy patterns, guilt we can’t shake, or anxiety we’ve come to expect. But healing often begins in the surrender. When we allow ourselves to acknowledge the pain, to grieve what was, and to let go of what we cannot fix, we make space for something better.

At Fortify Christian Counseling, we walk with people through their shedding seasons. Whether you’re processing trauma, navigating a difficult relationship, recovering from addiction, or simply trying to find yourself again, we offer Scripturally sound, clinically competent care that meets you where you are and walks with you toward lasting hope.

If you’ve been trying to power through your pain alone, maybe this fall is your invitation to pause. To root down. To trust that what feels like falling apart might actually be falling into place.

You don’t have to be fully ready. You just have to be willing. Like the trees, your letting go might be the beginning of something beautiful. Ready to take the first step? Contact us to schedule a confidential session with one of our licensed professionals. In-person and virtual appointments available. (205) 974-2124. www.fortifychristiancounseling.com
