Perfection Vs. Excellence

Aaaah…perfection! Who knew one word could cause so many problems? We’re told from a very young age that practice makes perfect. I used to counter that argument by saying, “Yes, but nobody is perfect, so why practice?” My piano teacher never appreciated my fine skills of logic!

Perfection somehow became my standard. After all, if I don’t have time to do it right the first time, I certainly will not have time to RE-do it the second time. Knowing when it is better to do it “perfectly” or just to accomplish the task is difficult for many of my clients as well. Is something better than nothing? Is done better than perfect?

I freeze up when trying to accomplish something because it is not perfect yet. My perfectionism has led to something worse: procrastination. There are baby pictures of my kids still in boxes because I cannot finish the scrapbooks; unfinished projects around the house because I don’t have time to do them perfectly; ideas put back on the shelf or in a filing cabinet because they’re not quite ready. How many of you have had a great idea before someone else did, except they did something with it and made it big, instead of you? Procrastination only produces one thing: frustration.

This perfectionism mindset is a common reason for clutter in homes and offices. So many of us are waiting to find just the RIGHT system to snap us into shape and in the meantime, we live in chaos. We keep putting off to tomorrow what should be done today, hoping we can do it better then. We tell ourselves we will have more time tomorrow to complete a project, but tomorrow is already booked too!

If I am striving for perfection, I will always fail. So now, I strive for excellence. Face it – our homes and offices will never be perfect. But are they better? Can we accept it and be proud of our efforts, even if it’s not completely perfect? Consider it a work in progress, realizing your needs will continue to change as your life does. We live in a world which is constantly changing as new ideas, technology and solutions are developed. So, even that which is “perfect” today will not be tomorrow. So, DO something today – and tomorrow, you can do it even better!

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus makes a statement that stands in complete opposition to one of our society’s most entrenched values. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with marriage, the sanctity of life, or even immoral conduct. “No one can serve two masters,” he said. “For either he will love the one and hate the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Hate money? Despise money? The inability to wrap our minds around such a statement reflects the degree to which our society’s love of money has seeped into our thinking. Even Christians feel compelled to back-peddle or caveat the words of Christ on this one.

In his new book, Redeeming Money, Paul David Tripp tackles the incongruity between what the Bible says about money and how most of us actually live. This is not a “how to” book. It is not about debt reduction, retirement planning, or paying tithes. Tripp is concerned about the spiritual seduction of money, which is far more important than our 401K or credit score. The question is not what we do with money, but what money does in us. Do we envy those with it? Do we look down on those without it? Are we in constant anxiety over the amount we have, or do not have?

Author: David Paul Tripp
Author: David Paul Tripp

Money can be a tool in the hands of a godly person. It can also be an invisible idol, robbing us of our trust in the goodness of God, stealing our joy, contentment and peace. We are a people obsessed with money. We are one of the richest nations in human history and we still don’t think we have enough. The most important principle Tripp shares in Redeeming Money is that financial matters always concern the heart. There is a remedy for our money problem, and it is not found in financial manuals or budgets. It is found in the grace of God.

For the second year in a row, Alabama State Representative Arnold Mooney has been recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) as Legislator of the Year for his efforts to advance the mission of MADD, “To end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes and prevent underage drinking.”

Citing his conservative, commonsense, businessman’s approach to government, State Representative Arnold Mooney (R – North Shelby) is seeking a second term as the representative for House District 43, which covers much of North Shelby County. “As a House member, I have stood up for the conservative beliefs, morals, and values that define Alabamians and the Alabama Republican Party, worked to ensure our state budgets spend within their means, and fought against the passage of tax increases on the citizens of our state,” Mooney said. “We have also successfully implemented several needed reforms that will ensure Alabama does not look back as we continue to move forward building a sound, job growth economy. More work remains to be done and I look forward to doing my part while serving a second term in Montgomery.”

Since taking office in 2014, Mooney sponsored and co-sponsored 22 bills that passed, several received national attention. National labor unions increased their efforts to organize industrial facilities across the southeast and experienced successes that included, Volkswagen in Tennessee and Golden Dragon in Wilcox County, prompted Mooney to sponsor and pass a constitutional amendment establishing Alabama as a “right-to-work” state. This provides non-union workers with blanket employment protections. Voters concurred and ratified Mooney’s constitutional amendment by a 70 percent to 30 percent margin on the 2016 election ballot. Mooney also sponsored and passed the “Health Care Rights of Conscience Act,” which provides civil and criminal immunity for Alabama health care workers who refuse to perform certain procedures, such as services relating to abortion, human cloning, human embryonic stem cell research, and sterilization, that violate their sincerely-held religious beliefs.

As the House Sponsor for the Closed Primary Run-off Bill, he was successful in securing its passage, thereby ending cross-over voting in Alabama, and ensuring integrity in our elections. By repeatedly sponsoring House legislation to end the practice of charging Lodging Tax on Meeting rooms for conventions, events and social occasions, Mooney is responsible for the Department of Revenue ending its anti-competitive assessment of the tax.

During the 2018 Session Mooney was the House Sponsor for the successful passage of the DUI-Inter Lock Bill that makes our roadways safer from drunk drivers by requiring more use of Interlock devices. He also sponsored the passage of the Freedom of Religious Liberty and Constitutional Display of the Ten Commandments Amendment which will be voted on in November and the Alabama Electronic Security Board of licensure Bill providing protection to Senior Citizens from high pressure sales tactics and unwanted security installations. Mooney was also the House Sponsor of legislation that has put a spotlight on and begun the favorable discussion of ending Civil Asset Forfeiture problems in Alabama. “It’s about doing the right thing, for the right reason, the right way, at the right time,” says Congressman Gary Palmer about his role and the role of his team in serving families in Alabama’s Sixth Congressional District (Jefferson, Shelby, Blount, Bibb, Chilton and Coosa Counties) in Washington, D.C.Palmer believes his first two terms in office have given him the opportunity to build credibility, gather information and drive solutions to issues like paying down the national debt by cutting spending, including eliminating improper payments, and a health care plan that is affordable and available.

Palmer Family
Palmer and his wife Ann live in Hoover and attend Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Their children, Claire, Kathleen, and Rob, graduated from Briarwood Christian School and Auburn University

“It’s a nuts and bolts effort from day one,” says Palmer who sees a third term in office as an opportunity to do even more for the people of Alabama and the nation. “I’m not interested in passing a bunch of bills, so I can come back and tell you how many bills I’ve passed. I’m interested in doing things that will really substantively improve the nations prospects…It won’t be breaking news, but it will have a big impact,” says Palmer.

Congressman Palmer uses social media and Palmer.House.gov to inform local citizens on important national issues, his committee work, and new bills and resolutions sent to the House floor for consideration. He is also committed to being in the District to meet regularly with constituents, particularly the area’s youth. “I love talking to young people, especially having the opportunity to give them a vision for when the time comes that they are going to lead, and when that time comes, they are prepared for it,” says Palmer.

When it comes to Palmer’s congressional accomplishments over the past four years, he points to his team in Washington, his team in the District, local mayors, and Congressional colleagues, many of whom serve as he does from a Christian perspective “It often surprises people when I tell them how many Christians there are in Congress. I am in a Bible study that meets very Wednesday morning and we rotate around to each other’s offices. And then I’ve got a group of guys, there are six of us, that meet on the mornings we are flying home. We meet at 6 a.m. to pray for one another and hold each other accountable, and that goes on all over on the House and on the Senate side,” explains Palmer. “People who are bearing one another’s burdens, praying for one another, and trying to live out their faith in a fairly hostile environment that does not always appreciate people who love the Lord and are trying as best they can to serve His purposes in their lives.” Learn more about Congressman Palmer’s faith and family at www.birminghamchristian.com/cover-story-gary-palmer.

The Home Front

First impressions mean everything. No one wants to be remembered for their wet noodle handshake. Even architecture isn’t immune to the first-glance bias of which we’re all guilty. It’s hard to shake those cold, forgettable first steps onto an unoriginal property. A cookie cutter space is going to feel like oatmeal raisin in a market crowded with chocolate chip–yes, we said it. Thankfully, your home or business still has a chance to impress first-time visitors. A single wrought iron piece can elevate and enliven where you work or live with a luxurious, original look. That’s where Bob, John and Classic Iron Works come in.

Bob Cooley and John Gallagher first opened Birmingham’s Classic Iron Works in the days of VHS and dial-up. Unlike those contemporaries, Bob and John outlasted all the flips, flops and fads that defined the 90s and 00s. If you ask them for the secret to staying in business for over 25 years, they’ll tell you that a well-made product and excellent service never go out of style. With over 70 years of expertise between them, you can trust these two to deliver only the best for your space.

Classic Iron isn’t “Your Door Store” for nothing. Elegant, functional wrought iron door designs are Bob and John’s bread and butter. Not only are these pieces guaranteed to wow company or clients, but their strength lends an extra layer of security that can’t be snipped, hacked or scaled. Similarly, the Classic team marries beautiful form with wrought iron’s robustness in all their products. Applications like attractive security bars, carports, fencing, railing and driveway gates are well appointed from the curb and will stand the test of time.

Wrought iron isn’t just an ideal way to enhance residential property value. Your commercial space can benefit from a Classic touch, too! Strategically placed railing shows your clientele that you care while potentially reducing your liability. Other installations, like protective HVAC housings, can embellish and reimagine the utilitarian parts of a structure that we’ve all come to accept as eyesores.

Much like their products, Bob, John and the Classic Iron Works crew have become local fixtures of Birmingham whom you can count on for steadfast service for years to come. Pay a visit to their 1st Avenue North showroom, give them a call or visit them on the web; we guarantee you’ll be craving a Classic creation in no time! †

The secret is out! If you are looking for premier mountain living- you only need to travel a few miles outside of Birmingham, Ala. to The Highlands, an area development located in Pelham and Chelsea.

Southern Living Top Pick. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, The Highlands was recently recognized by the editors of Southern Living as a “top pick for mountain living” and named a Southern Living Inspired Community. To receive this distinction, a community must embrace the natural beauty of Southern landscape, display the best of Southern Living inspired architecture and create environments that foster community through gatherings and celebrations. “At Southern Living, we look for communities whose architecture speaks to the region and brings the pages of the magazine to life. The Highlands did just that and more,” said Kristen Payne, Vice President, Meredith Corporation, Licensing. “Homes are tucked into the mountainside and use nature as their guide for colors and design.  A truly special place is created by those who honor the land and celebrate the beauty of the south.”

“Our vision for The Highlands was to create a place where homeowners would feel a sense of community while preserving the beauty and serenity of nature,” explains developer David Brogdon. His plans for the community included donating 217 acres of undeveloped forest from the original 722 acres to a land trust conservancy where it will remain undisturbed for the enjoyment of The Highlands residents. Found within the conservancy is a diverse topography including lush valley forests and rocky mountain vistas with miles of hiking trails and two stocked lakes. To be able to truly grasp the detail and beauty that has gone into this development, a visit to The Highlands is a must. The Welcome Center is open seven days a week. Animal Planet Treehouse. Treehouse Master, Pete Nelson, walked The Highlands community with David and Suzanne Brogdon earlier this year and couldn’t wait to start filming the construction of his first masterpiece in Alabama dubbed the “Super Spy Treehouse.” The Brogdon’s loved to watch Nelson on Treehouse Masters together and often imagined having a treehouse of their own. Suzanne reached out to Nelson in 2017 to surprise her husband. She received a call from the show producers they had been chosen not only to have Nelson build a treehouse for them but also for it to be produced for television! The completed Treehouse was first featured on Animal Planet in September. The house sits 19 feet high in four chestnut oaks, can be accessed only by a bridge connected to the rocky hillside, and comes complete with gadgets like a thumb print lock on the front door, a mirror in the great room that hides a television, and a secret room accessed only through a bookcase. Most important to Nelson and the Brogdons, the treehouse is a “headquarters for family and togetherness.” If you visit the Welcome Center at The Highlands Community, the staff will be happy to point out the path that will lead you to a view of the “Super Spy Tree House.”
