Education Extra
Heritage Christian Academy (HCA), an interdenominational 3K-12th grade private Christian school in Hoover, Alabama knows that the Greater Birmingham Area does not lack for excellent schools. Year after year public and private educational institutions around town are recognized for accomplishments and distinction in academics, athletics and arts. It can be difficult for local parents to decide which school is “The Best Option” from what seems like many good options for their particular student and family.
HCA, like large public and private schools, offers a variety of classes, electives, sports teams, choirs, bands, and theatre troupes. Yet, because of limited slots available for a given activity, at a large school perhaps only a small percentage of students are able to participate. Prestigious private college preparatory schools may offer challenging curricula and promote analytical thinking as does HCA. Some private schools may promote views that are contradictory to a family’s fundamental beliefs. For a parent, finding the right school that partners in the spiritual, academic and social development of their student can be arduous.
Lynn Gurganus, Headmaster at Heritage Christian Academy, understands the weight that parents feel when selecting a school. In his passion for the well-being of the whole child, Mr. Gurganus understands the responsibility that a school has in teaching for a purpose greater than the next classroom test, or mastering an athletic or art skill. HCA knows the value of being a school family where the entire community is encouraged to participate.
In January the leadership at HCA began discussing a Spring Fundraiser. While there are many types of events that can bring monetary success, it was important to the HCA Staff and School Board that the fundraiser be reflective of the mission and vision of HCA. Mr. Gurganus explains, “As soon as the concept of making 10,000 meals for needy children was described to us, we realized that it aligned with who we are as a school. It was the perfect opportunity to engage our entire school community in what it means to be the ‘hands and feet’ of Jesus. We had discussions where we considered how we should respond to issues like hunger, homelessness, and poverty in general. Feed the Need allowed us to see the extent to which hunger exists, and then to be part of the solution. Our mission is ministering.”
