Extending Your Table: Christian Hospitality in the Thanksgiving Season

Parenting Points

As the Thanksgiving season approaches, families often gather around tables filled with food and gratitude. But for Christian families, this season offers more than just celebration—it’s an opportunity to live out our faith through hospitality. Christian hospitality isn’t about entertaining or perfection; it’s about opening our homes and hearts to reflect the love of Jesus.

The Call to Hospitality. The Bible consistently calls God’s people to practice hospitality. Romans 12:13 says, “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality” (ESV). When we invite others into our homes, we’re doing more than sharing a meal—we’re offering friendship, encouragement, and a glimpse of Christ’s welcoming love through us.

The Power of Hospitality in Action. Hospitality can also be a powerful way to teach children about service and compassion. Inviting others in helps kids see faith in action—it shows them that ministry isn’t limited to church programs or mission trips; it happens right at home. You might start small: invite another family from church over for dinner, bake cookies together for a neighbor, or deliver a care package to someone going through a hard time. Even the youngest children can help by setting the table, making cards, or offering cheerful greetings.

The Mindset of Hospitality. Parents have the privilege of shaping how our families view hospitality. Instead of stressing over spotless kitchens or fancy meals, focus on creating a spirit of warmth and welcome. Let your children see that opening your home isn’t about impressing people—it’s about blessing them. When a guest walks through your door, make them feel like family. Pray together before they arrive, asking God to use your home as a place of peace and joy.

The Practice of Hospitality. This season, consider how your family might practice hospitality in creative ways. Invite someone who might be alone to Thanksgiving dinner. Host a neighborhood game night. Open your home for a small Bible study or prayer time. These simple acts of love can leave a lasting spiritual impact—not only on those you welcome, but on your children as they see faith lived out daily.

When we practice hospitality as a family, we make our homes a reflection of God’s kingdom—where everyone has a place at the table and every heart is embraced with grace.
