“Tom Sawyer” Presented by the Sylacauga Community Playhouse
February 23, 2018 - February 25, 2018
$15Sylacauga Community Playhouse invites you to see one of the most beloved characters of American fiction, Tom Sawyer, come to life on stage. Tom Sawyer, Ric Averill’s stage adaptation of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, directed by LaKeisha Crocker and Dan Nixon, will be performed by the Sylacauga Community Playhouse at B.B. Comer Auditorium, 801 Seminole Avenue, Sylacauga, Alabama. The performances will be February 23rd-25th. Friday and Saturday shows will be at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 :00 p.m. The performance time of the production is 90 minutes and is appropriate for 3rd grade and up.
Tom Sawyer is a force of nature – whether he’s sneaking out of his Aunt Polly’s house at night to visit the graveyard, or duping his playmates into white-washing a fence, or stealing a kiss from the ravishing Becky Thatcher, or taking a stand against the murderous Injun Joe. Tom’s small-town adventures on the banks of the Mississippi are the magical essence of childhood, a joyous leap into the great river of time and memory.
The production of Tom Sawyer consists of 43 cast members and over 21 crew members, all of which are volunteers. The mission of the Sylacauga Community Playhouse is to provide theatrical education, experiences, and quality entertainment throughout the community by creating theatre arts opportunities for all ages and those who are intellectually and physically challenged. According to SCP Board member Amy McDonald, people are the most valuable asset of the Sylacauga Community Playhouse. Without the gifts of time, talent, and financial support, Tom Sawyerand other productions would not be possible. “Even if you are not interested in acting on stage there is still a place for you at the SCP. There is always a need for set builders/painters, costume designers/seamstresses, and even people with accounting/bookkeeping skills. Whatever your talent or skill is, I am sure the SCP has a place for you,” says McDonald.
In addition to the 8 public performances, there will also be 6 school shows. More than 1500 students are pre-registered to see Tom Sawyer from over 14 schools. “Thanks to grants provided by Nemak and Resolute Forest Products underwriting the expense of the school performances, students are able to attend at a discounted ticket price,” McDonald says.
Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at door. Advanced tickets are available at Maxye Veasey Senior Center, the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, by phone at 256.369.3003, or online at www.scplayhouse.com.
