A Colonial Christmas at American Village
Step back in time and enjoy a glorious celebration of Christmas. December 6-8 American Village in Montevallo will host a Colonial Christmas lunch in Liberty Hall, inspired by White House architect James Hoban’s Public Audience Chamber now known as the East Room. Your luncheon hostess will be the young Martha Washington who will share with you how she met George Washington, their courtship and marriage on the twelfth day after Christmas.
Your tour will include a visit to Washington’s Continental Army Encampment at Valley Forge where in spite of extremely difficult conditions at one of the Continental Army’s darkest hours, three soldiers reflect and sing about the joy of Christmastime. Plus, a visit to a Virginia settler’s home where three wives of Continental Army soldiers are observed remembering their husbands and missing them at Christmas. The ladies lift each other’s spirits and dance to celebrate the Christmas holiday. You will also hear from Eleanor Parke Custis, George Washington’s granddaughter, who shares her memories of her grandfather and festive Christmas traditions at Washington’s Mount Vernon. And you won’t want to miss seeing the Village’s extensive miniature Christmas Village complete with 55 buildings and a working Southern Railway train!
Visitors can choose a 10:30am-1pm or Noon-2:30pm lunch/tour on December 6, 7, 8 or 9. To make reservations and purchase tickets ($25 each), call 665-3535 ext. 1031 or email [email protected]. †
