Church Leaders
After 36 years of dedicated service, Bishop David Houston retired from Vandiver Church of God. Known for his integrity and compassion, and lovingly called Pastor Houston or Brother David by many, he has touched the lives of countless individuals throughout his career, embodying the love of Christ through his unwavering commitment to ministry.
Pastor Houston received his education at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. He began his ministry in 1978 after receiving his Exhorter License through the Church of God. He was ordained as a minister in 1990, and in 2015, he became an Ordained Bishop with the Church of God. His ministry took him to various churches across Ala., beginning with his role as Pastor at Sylacauga Westside Church of God, serving as a lay minister at Childersburg Church of God and also traveling throughout the state as an evangelist. In January 1989, Pastor Houston began his leadership at Vandiver Church of God. Under his guidance, the church has seen significant growth, including the addition of a new sanctuary and education wing. In 2007, the church purchased 40 acres of land across the street, laying the groundwork for the dream of a new facility. This vision came to life in May of 2015 with the opening of a new church building. By February 2025, the $4 million facility was fully paid off, marking a major milestone in the church’s journey.
Throughout his tenure, Pastor Houston, with his beloved wife Penny by his side, devoted countless hours to pouring into the hearts of others through his powerful sermons, community outreach, home and hospital visitations, and many other services. Their dedication to serving others has made a lasting impact on both the church and the surrounding communities. A special Retirement Celebration was held on March 16 at Vandiver Church of God to honor Pastor Houston’s and Penny’s many years of faithful service.
