Birmingham’s only Byzantine Catholic Church will host its 35th Middle Eastern Food Festival September 8-10. The Festival will take place at St. George Melkite Catholic Church at 425 16th Avenue South. True to its name, the Festival will offer homemade culinary choices like rolled grape leaves, Kibbee and Mediterranean-style chicken.
The “mile long” sweet booth will offer a variety of pastries and cakes, and vegetarian choices like spinach pies and falafel will also be available. In addition to the cuisine, the celebration will include live Arabic music and dancing Friday and Saturday night 6-10pm and informative church tours will be offered throughout each day until 8pm. The festival is also a great place to find unique gifts like hand-carved olive wood from the Holy Land and jewelry made from the church’s original stained-glass windows. All proceeds from the festival will benefit local charities including “Pathways of Birmingham Women’s Shelter” and “Three Hots & a Cot”, a nonprofit organization which that helps veterans. Saint George Melkite Catholic Church is located in the heart of Southside, near UAB, 425 16th Avenue South.
