With winter now fast approaching, your home and its components should be ready for what the season will bring. The temperature drop can do a number on your roof, replacement windows, and siding. However, they can better withstand the weather if they are well-maintained. Hinkle Roofing shares three pointers on how to maintain your siding to prepare it for winter.

1. Fiber Cement Siding. Fiber cement siding is known for its durability and weather resistance. Although it generally doesn’t need extensive maintenance, there are a few things you can do to make it last even longer. Before winter, double-check any caulking on areas where the siding material meets other materials or home components, such as windows. Gaps in caulking must be filled to ensure ultimate insulation come winter.

2. Vinyl Siding. Vinyl Siding is also known for being easy to maintain. However, it can expand and contract when exposed to extreme temperatures. Proper installation is crucial to prevent this natural phenomenon from causing vinyl siding deterioration or damage. Basic regular cleaning is also needed to keep the siding looking good.

3. Cedar Siding. Water and moisture is the biggest enemy of wood or cedar siding. So, before winter officially comes, check your cedar siding for signs of moisture-related issues, such as rotting. Depending on the extent of the problem, a replacement may eventually be required. For the best results, cedar siding performs better if applied with special coatings that protect it from the destructive effects of water and moisture.
