Church Steps Up to Help Meet Need for Blood

Prince of Peace Catholic Parish in Hoover recently partnered with UAB, St. Vincent’s Health System, the American Red Cross and Life South to hold a week-long blood drive. The drive was expected to An average of 12 donors a day was expected but that far surpassed expectations. According to UAB’s Kathy Crawford, 364 people, an average of 73 per day, donated during the five-day drive at the church held March 30 through April 3. UAB expected about 12 donors per day. UAB approached POP about holding a blood drive and Fr. John Fallon quickly agreed to offer the parish’s Deasy Hall for this act of community charity. All social distancing and infection control protocols were observed and managed by medical professionals during the blood drive. The need for blood will continue throughout the disruption caused by the coronavirus, according to UAB. †
