It recently occurred to me I’ve been packing school lunches for 14 years! And as silly as it may sound- I wouldn’t trade that time for anything. My older son “graduated” to school lunch in high school, but my younger two always preferred a sack lunch. As their senior year ended last week, I realized I was making their last high school lunch! All you moms out there with high school graduates understand my sentimental struggle with “lasts”! I thought back on a few of the “creative” lunches I made. Low on sandwich bread? Sneak in a heel of a bread or how about peanut butter on a hamburger bun! I never heard a complaint.
My favorite part of lunch making was to scribble a note on an index card and stick it inside – I just wish I had done it more! Not long ago I found one of those “lunch notes” in my son’s messy room (I won’t say which one) and it filled my heart to know he had hung onto it. So, in true mommy form, I couldn’t help myself but stick one final note inside that final lunch!
Whether they tell us or not, I firmly believe the little things we do for our children matter. You are “packing their lunch” for life. Keep on packing! And keep on praying for God to work through you and your children. Nothing is impossible with Him! (Luke 1:37)
We have His promise that if “we start our children off on the way they should go, even when they are old they will not turn from it” (Proverbs 22:6) and He loves them even more than we do!
