Family gatherings can evoke a mix of excitement and apprehension, especially when you know that certain relatives tend to stir tension or disagreement. The current cultural divides and an election year may stir up the Thanksgiving dinner table more than most years. As followers of Jesus, we are called to embody love, grace, and forgiveness, even when faced with challenging family dynamics. We also have an excellent opportunity to show our kids how to reflect Jesus in such moments. So, what are some things that you can do to prepare for your family holidays this year?
1. Approach Family Gatherings with Prayer and Grace. Before you attend family functions, take time to pray for the gathering and your relatives. Pray for peace, understanding, and the heart to respond in love, no matter the situation. Romans 12:18 ESV reminds us, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” This doesn’t mean avoiding conflict but cultivating an attitude of grace and humility in your interactions.
2. Focus on Common Ground. When conversations become heated or divisive, remember the common ground you share. Many family members may have differing beliefs or lifestyles but finding common interests- such as a love for family traditions or shared life experiences- can help ease tension. Focusing on mutual interests can foster a more positive atmosphere.
3. Embrace Forgiveness. No family is without conflicts, and revisiting the fundamental biblical principle of forgiveness is essential. Ephesians 4:32 ESV encourages, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Holding onto past grievances can weigh heavy on our hearts. To move forward, consciously choose to forgive, recognizing that forgiveness doesn’t absolve hurtful behaviors but frees you from resentment.
4. Reflect Christ’s Love. Above all, let your actions reflect Christ’s love. Whenever possible, demonstrate kindness, patience, and humility. Remember the example of Jesus, who interacted with those who challenged and opposed Him with love and compassion. Even when disagreements arise, maintaining a posture of love can leave a lasting impression on your relatives, potentially opening doors for deeper conversations about faith and understanding.
Though dealing with difficult relatives is likely not a highlight of your holiday season, it is a place for you to show grace and model faith before your kids. As we seek to invite Jesus into our holidays and represent him well, you may be surprised to see what God can do in your family this holiday season.
