Faith Conversations in Your Home

Parenting Points

For many parents, the idea of having a faith conversation with their children is a daunting task. We have questions about our faith and fear our kids’ constant questioning of “Why?” will lead down paths we do not feel equipped to handle. We often would prefer to outsource spiritual questions and development to the professionals at our local church. But study after study on long-term faith in the next generation points to the truth that parents are the most significant voice in shaping the faith of their children.

To best explore what this could look like in your home, we will go back to the Shema in the book of Deuteronomy. Here Moses gathers the people to teach them how they are to have faith conversations in everyday life to pass the truths they know about God to the next generation. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 ESV says, “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” What do faith conversations look like considering the Shema?

Faith Conversations Begin with You. Moses begins by addressing the parents’ hearts. For true spiritual transformation to begin in a home, it must begin with you. Your kids are watching how you handle your faith and what you truly value. Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to transform your heart first so that faith conversations naturally flow in your everyday conversations?

Faith Conversations Come in Everyday Moments. Moses paints a picture of the daily life of a family. They are doing things not unlike what we would do with our family on a typical day: talking, sitting, walking, going to sleep, and waking up. In the middle of the everyday activities of life, spiritual conversations are taking place as the Holy Spirit opens the door. Are you looking for open doors for spiritual conversations and allowing the Holy Spirit to give you the words to say?

Faith Conversations Are Following the Holy Spirit’s Leading. Faith conversations are less about having the right answer and more about letting faith flow from your life while following the Holy Spirit’s leading. He is the One who will lead, guide, and direct you as you talk about your faith with your kids.
