Everyone in the South has been patiently anticipating the awakening of spring––and it’s here! We can finally put our oversized scarves and chunky boots away, and reach for our shorts and favorite t-shirts. Though we’re all collectively excited about the positive things that spring brings––picnics, walks in the park, warm weather––we must not forget that pest numbers exponentially increase as the weather warms up. Here are a few of the most common creepies and crawlies you’ll see during spring in Alabama.
Spiders. We figured we’d get the ball rolling by introducing the thing that fuels the nightmares of most people: spiders. As you’re probably aware, most spiders are no cause for concern––besides their horrifying eight eyes and spindly legs, they’re basically harmless. However, a few poisonous spiders are native to Alabama––black widows, brown widows, and brown recluses––and should be taken seriously if you come across them. If you do happen to come across these venomous creatures, make sure to call us right away.
Termites. In Alabama, termites begin to make their appearance right as spring is starting––they love warm weather. These little bugs are particularly destructive, and can cost you thousands of dollars in damage to your home. If you come across a termite, or suspect an infestation, don’t hesitate to contact us! Termites are incredibly destructive, and waiting around can result in irreparable damage to your home.
Wasps. Unlike docile bumblebees, wasps will not hesitate to sting when provoked. What’s worse, thousands of wasps can swarm from a single hive. Since wasps nest in the ground, it’s a good idea to wear closed toed shoes in your yard if you suspect a wasp colony. As always, call us and we’ll handle it so you can go back to running around barefoot.
Ants. Like most insects, ants are cold-blooded and thrive when the temperature outside rises. After a winter season of inactivity, ants come to life in the spring to start building colonies. Similar to wasps, ants will bite when provoked as a defense mechanism. We understand the frustration of finding a line of ants trailing up and down the foundation of countertops, baseboards, and other places inside of your home––and we’re here to help! After calling your trusty pest control company, we also recommend getting rid of any food scraps left in your kitchen and keeping pet food off of the floor to prevent attracting a colony. Remember, where there’s one ant––there are many.
