SUMMARY:YWCA Domestic Violence Awareness Walk
DESCRIPTION:The YWCA of Central Alabama will hold a walk and vigil honoring victims of domestic violence. The walk will start at the YWCA of Central Alabama at 309 23rd Street North\, and go seven blocks to the 16th Street Baptist Church where we will read the names of this year’s victims. Seven blocks represents the minimum number of times it may take a woman to flee an abusive relationship. Unfortunately\, Birmingham has the highest rate of domestic violence in the state. In 2017\, there 596 felony DV cases and 4\,919 misdemeanor cases.  \nThe YWCA will provide purple ribbons for everyone to wear for the event and candles will be provided. \nThe YWCA provides emergency shelter both here and in St. Clair County for victims of domestic violence\, manage a 24/7 crisis hotline\, 205.322.HURT (4878)\, provide court advocacy and group counseling for those in need. We are also the only provider for supervised visitation in Jefferson County\, which is often necessary in DV cases. \n

Bid on art from our students and local artists\, an exquisite selection of jewelry\, accessories\, and gift cards from local businesses along with one-of-a-kind collector’s items. Guests will enjoy cocktails\, live music by Eric Essix\, dancing\, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a brief program highlighting Cornerstone’s successes over the past 25 years. \nWe are proud to announce this year’s honoree is Mr. Tommy Brigham. Tommy has served on the Cornerstone Board of Directors for many years and is a long-time supporter of Cornerstone School. We will also recognize the 2018 Volunteer of the Year\, Mrs. Katherine Robertson. \nAs always\, 100% of the proceeds will directly benefit over 570 students at Cornerstone Schools of Alabama. \nCornerstone Schools of Alabama is a non-profit\, Christian school that serves inner city students in grades K4-12. Cornerstone goes beyond education to inspire and empower students to glorify God. DESCRIPTION:Composting is nature’s way of recycling with numerous benefits: it enriches soil\, helps retain moisture and suppresses plant diseases and pests; reduces the need for chemical fertilizers; reduces methane emissions from landfills; and lowers your carbon footprint. As composting can build a foundation for soil health\, we will also discuss how to build a foundation for survivor health. You will also make a compost bin to take home! Come and learn all about the benefits of composting\, micro and macronutrients and safe lifting techniques to use with your new compost bin. To reserve your place\, we request a $5 reservation fee.
