SUMMARY:St. Symeon Food & Culture Fair
DESCRIPTION:The St. Symeon Food and Culture Fair returns this October 9 from 9-3 with an outdoor marketplace\, church tours\, a choir concert\, and a talk about Christian art in the Byzantine tradition. Guests can buy delicious breakfast and lunch as well as baked goods and gifts. The event is free to attend.  \nThis year’s event will feature favorite items from past fairs\, including homemade pierogi\, made-to-order Greek donuts\, and kielbasa sandwiches\, as well as wide variety of baked goods available in the event’s multi-ethnic outdoor marketplace. \n“At St. Symeon\, we love to bake and cook\,” said event chairperson Niki May\, “but our parish is really known for our choir.” The St. Symeon Orthodox Church Choir has recorded several albums\, and its work is in regular rotation on Ancient Faith Radio. The choir will present a concert at 11 a.m. titled “The Psalms: Songbook of the Church.”  \nThe church was built in 2014 and features floor-to-ceiling icon murals painted in traditional Byzantine style. It will be open for tours throughout the fair. At 1 p.m.\, Protodeacon Ephraim Rivers will present “What is Iconography?\,” a talk explaining the ancient Christian tradition of sacred art and the role of icons in Orthodox Christianity. \nSt. Symeon Orthodox Church is located at 3101 Clairmont Avenue in Birmingham. It is a parish of the Orthodox Church in America\, a jurisdiction of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Regular weekly services include Great Vespers on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and the Divine Liturgy on Sundays at 10 a.m. A full schedule of services is available at StSymeon.com. Services are in English and visitors are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Bundles of Hope is locally operated non-profit organization that supports local parents experiencing financial hardship by providing the adequate supply of diapers needed to keep a child clean\, dry and healthy. The diapers and financial donations collected by Bundles of Hope allows them to serve hundreds of families each week. The 7th Annual Stuff the Bus Diaper Drive begins on Friday\, September 24th\, 2021 and is a ten day event that is vital to the organizations ability to continue serving these families\, and can provide the opportunity to assist even more of parents & children that still need help. \nFor the last 5 years Altasurance – previously as Red Rock Insurance Group\, has proudly sponsored Bundles of Hope\, as well as the annual Stuff the Bus diaper drives. DESCRIPTION:The Food Festival will take place at Saint George Melkite Catholic Church\, near UAB at 425 16th Avenue South. The hours of operation are 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM. The festival offers a convenient drive through service between the hours of 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Lunch orders of $75.00 or more can be delivered to the downtown area on Thursday and Friday. For takeout and delivery orders call 492-9621 or email foodorders@saintgeorgeonline.org. Walk up ordering and outdoor seating will also be available; ordering ahead online is greatly encouraged: foodorders@saintgeorgeonline.org. \nThe menu of delicious foods include: baked Kibbee\, stuffed grape leaves\, spinach pies\, meat pies\, Falafel\, Mediterranean style chicken and more. For a taste of most everything try the Nile Plate or Oasis Plate. The Nile includes Kibbee as its entrée and the Oasis includes Mediterranean style chicken as its entrée. Both plates include rice and green beans cooked in seasoned tomato sauce\, freshly made salad\, grape leaves\, and Hummus and pita bread. The menu offers vegetarian plates and sides as well. \nAn incredible array of Middle Eastern sweets will be offered. Zalabieh\, a freshly fried doughnut dipped in rose flavored syrup and dusted with powdered sugar is a must try. Compliment above sweet treats with Arabic coffee.
