SUMMARY:Junior League of Birmingham Diaper Drive 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Junior League of Birmingham (JLB) is pleased to announce its fifth annual Diaper Drive\, to be held Friday\, Sept. 25 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the JLB Building (2212 20th Ave. S.; Birmingham\, AL 35223). The Diaper Drive fundraiser is a part of Diaper Need Awareness Week\, taking place Sept. 21-27. To maintain COVID-19 safety precautions\, the Diaper Drive will be a contactless\, drive-thru event. Donors do not need to get out of their cars; volunteers will remove the diapers from trunks or backseats.  \nThe event will help stock the JLB Diaper Bank\, which distributes thousands of diapers each month to 230 vetted organizations\, such as Thrive Together\, Family Reunification\, Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Center\, Bridge Ministries\, UAB and Chocolate Milk Mommies. The JLB has partnered with the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama to store the diapers and vet the organizations that receive diapers through the JLB Diaper Bank. With one in three U.S. families reporting suffering from diaper need\, the JLB is urging capable families to support this initiative and help provide diapers to women and children unable to purchase diapers themselves. \nThe Diaper Bank is one of the Junior League’s 40 community projects. With more than 2\,200 active members\, the JLB provides 55\,000-plus volunteer hours annually and $1M in direct funding to the Birmingham community. Those that make a donation to the JLB Diaper Bank will be entered to win a Shop Save & Share card\, a ticket to Market Noel or a JLB gift shop gift card.

This special week is sponsored by Alabama Family Rights Association. \nHow can you celebrate? \nFamily Day is a national movement to celebrate parental engagement as an effective tool to help keep America’s children substance-free. Families are the cornerstone of an orderly society. However\, over the last several decades\, Alabama families have grown progressively weaker. Family Day in Alabama has evolved to “Family Week” and expanded to reflect the importance of connecting with children throughout the week/day and making a concentrated effort to implement programs that stress the importance of a child’s needs and the importance of interacting together as a family. Scientific data indicates that when both parents are actively involved in a child’s life\, the outcome is measurably improved. \nChildren spending significant time with their parents and family members decreases the chances of youth suicides\, school dropouts\, juvenile drug abuse\, teen pregnancies\, and incarceration. Research shows that children with hands-on parents are far less likely to exhibit risky and disruptive behavioral problems. This is an important local and national initiative to remind parents\, communities\, and leaders\, that a child whose parents are not engaged and involved in their upbringing and care is a child “at risk.” \nShow your support for children and family on Monday\, September 28\, 2020 and anytime during the week of September 27th. We are asking you to eat a meal or do some other activity together. SUMMARY:Drive-Through Trunk or Treat!
DESCRIPTION:Calera Main Street\, a revitalization program with a focus on economic development and historic preservation\, will hold a COVID-19 friendly event for safe trick-or-treating on Thursday\, October 29\, 2020 from 5:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m. \nCollectivus Church is sponsoring the second annual community event with a very different spin this year in order to keep it safe for everyone. “Last year we had 25 trunks lined up along the sidewalk on AL-25 and families lined the streets to go from trunk to trunk on foot\,” Pastor Ben Nelson explained. “This year\, we will park approximately 45 vehicles in a large gravel lot and direct traffic up and down each row of decorated trunks\, so families never have to leave their cars. We will even have an interactive radio station to set the mood! The very first trunk you come to will give each car a special bag that will be held outside their window. Masked and gloved participants at each decorated trunk will place treats in the bag as the vehicles slowly drive through. It will be similar to a drive-through light show where everyone in the car gets to see everything while safely enjoying the holiday.” \nThe drive-through event will be located at 1771 9th Street in Calera\, near the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum. There will also be a drive-in movie starting at 6:00 and food trucks will be available from 5:00-7:00 in the Calera Courtyard located at 1120 17th Ave.\, behind the downtown shops. Many local Main Street merchants will also be open with specials and promotions. Safe carpooling (within your family group) is strongly encouraged. \nThis event will follow all recommendations from the Alabama Department of Public Health and the CDC\, including mandatory mask wearing\, social distancing\, sanitation\, and reduced occupancy in retail establishments. All candy and giveaways will be prepared and distributed with minimum handling. No self-service will be allowed to further minimize risk.

Guests can partake in the happy haunts by wearing your favorite costume. Enjoy trick-or-treating in the new Candy Cave located in the Zoo’s Reptile Building. Take a wild ride around the Zoo on our Haunted Express Train and go for a spin on the Cobweb Carousel. Fall and holiday themed animal enrichment will take place every day of the event\, in addition to animal greetings\, appearances by special guests\, and habitat decorating contests between Zoo staff from various departments! \nHoots & Howls Candy Cave and rides are an additional cost and not included in Zoo admission. Guests to Hoots & Howls will have to purchase Zoo admission for the day and either an event wristband or single candy ticket. General admission\, Hoots & Howls wristbands\, and single Candy Cave tickets are available for purchase onsite and online at birminghamzoo.com. \nHoots & Howls is a limited socially-distanced event and guests are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online before arriving to the Zoo. Event details\, including activities schedule\, pricing\, ticket sales\, and information for Members are available on the Zoo’s website at birminghamzoo.com/hootsandhowls. Event activities and animal enrichment are included in the price of Zoo admission for the day.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Nov. 14\, King’s Home will hold their 11th Annual Kampfire for the King\, a free\, family-friendly outdoor event that will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at their Chelsea campus. \nThis year\, festivities will kick-off  with the 2nd Annual Cornhole Tournament and 10th Annual Randy Howell Fishing Rodeo beginning at 10 a.m. Family activities include a petting farm\, face-painting\, hayrides\, inflatables\, fishing and more! Additionally\, there will be live music for all to enjoy. Food will be available to purchase from a selection of food trucks. \n2014 Bassmaster Classic Champion and a 27-year veteran of tour-level competition\, Randy Howell is giving away his 2020 Tournament Triton/Mercury Rig-Hope X\, valued at over $85\,000 to raise money for King’s Home at 2 p.m. When donors make a donation of $100 to King’s Home\, Randy will give donors the opportunity to win Hope X.  \nRandy Howell’s Boat Giveaway benefiting King’s Home began in 2011. Over the past ten years\, the boat donations have gone towards providing hope and healing for over 3\,500 residents with over 400\,000 nights of refuge with warm meals\, a safe place to sleep\, clothing\, transportation\, and so much more. \nAll donations will benefit King’s Home. Randy and Robin Howell have been amazing advocates of hope for the youth\, women\, and kids at King’s Home for the past ten years.  \nThe goal of Kampfire for the King is to host a fun day centered around kids as well as raise awareness and funds for King’s Home through Randy Howell’s Boat Giveaway and Cornhole Tournament.
