SUMMARY:Heritage Christian Academy will make 10\,000 meals to feed needy children
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Christian Academy will be participating in a Feed the Need mission when 10\,000 meals for starving children will be packed in the Shades Mountain Community Church gym on May 8th from 8:30 – 2:30pm. Students ages 5 – 18 will be packing food “to make a hands-on difference in the world”. The meals packed consist of rice\, vitamins\, dried vegetables\, and protein. Eighty-five hundred meals will be shipped to Haiti\, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Government instability\, deforestation and natural disasters have contributed to Haiti’s extreme poverty. The remaining 1500 meals will stay in Birmingham to feed malnourished children in our community. \nHCA is partnering with The Champion Group who explains that\, “The concept behind Feed the Need is essentially bringing an overseas ‘mission trip’ experience onto a school campus… (Feed the Need) gives participants the opportunity to make a hands-on difference in the world while learning direct character lessons of selflessness\, serving others\, generosity and gratitude. \nThe May 8th “Packing Party” will include Students\, Faculty\, Staff\, HCA families and others in the community who would like to participate in the opportunity to serve. Funds raised exceeding the cost of 10\,000 meals will go toward school technology enhancement\, gym updates and teacher continuing education. SUMMARY:St. Symeon Food and Culture Fair
DESCRIPTION:Shop a one-day-only multi-ethnic food bazaar and bakery\, tour the church\, learn about the iconographic murals\, and hear St. Symeon’s internationally acclaimed choir at this fun event for the whole family. \n\n\nSt. Symeon Orthodox Christian Church is located at the convergence of the Highland Park\, Forest Park\, and Southside neighborhoods in Birmingham\, where the congregation “moved in” to a newly built church building in January 2015. Neighbors are probably familiar with the church’s iconic Russian style onion dome and the large mosaic icon overlooking Clairmont Avenue. When the church was brand new\, the interior walls were bare and white. They are not bare anymore! A team of talented iconographers have now made three trips to Birmingham\, each time filling a new part of the church with vivid iconographic murals in the ancient Christian tradition. There is much to see!\n\nThe St. Symeon Food and Culture Fair is the congregation’s way of welcoming neighbors to come tour the new church building\, learn about the iconographic murals being painted inside\, hear the internationally acclaimed choir\, and shop at a one-day-only multi-ethnic food bazaar and bakery. There will be coffee\, tea\, and treats to enjoy at the fair plus plenty of baked goods to take home. Come to the fair on April 28\, 2018\, from 10-4.
